I saw his 15 seconds of fame on Youtube "Locked Up Abroad" (while it was still active)
His story was kind of sad. Then I remembered I also had a friend that smuggled pot into Korea, and that friend almost got canned.
Difference between Cullen and my friend, Cullen was greedy.
No need to buy his book. I'll wait until he makes a Lifetime Original Movie out of it and watch for free  |

The guy is a self-aggrandizing overwriter, and his attempts to make his exploits a poetic tragedy on his Banged Up Abroad episode were laughable.
"The Koreans have a beautiful phrase, 'Walking into the tiger's cave.' That's exactly what I was doing." Yeah, dbag...we have that phrase too, ever heard of the lion's den?  |

I agree with this.
Maybe I'll write a book about my trip to Disneyland. There were all types of colorful characters, many adventures to be had, I found inspiration through the smiles on the faces of children, etc. It's like, "I DID something and now here's my story about me doing it!"
Now, if he had ESCAPED from prison like Billy Hayes and wrote a book like Midnight Express, THAT would be cool. Especially if it involved a run across the DMZ or a speedboat to Japan. |

Book was alright....compared to most "jailed abroad" stories, it's a decent effort....I skipped a lot in the middle when he talked about prison happenings....got kinda boring.
However, most of the third world prison stories are much better.
Korean prison is more so UTTERLY boring and safe than horrifying and/or dangerous like Thailand or the States....
I love these locked up abroad and drug smuggling attempt stories gone wrong stories.....the desire to make that quick buck, live a year long vacation for a a small smuggling deal, and the dreaded anticipation of getting caught makes these kinda books fairly entertaining even if you think they're stoner idiots.
It was worth a read back in America...I wouldn't pay full price and import it though. |

That show was the only interesting thing on Nat Geo Adventure, something which I lost after dropping Qook TV and getting Qook Skylife.
The book in this genre that I found most entertaining was "Off the Rails of Phnom Penh: Into the Dark Heart Of Guns, Girls and Ganja," though it's a bit dated now. |

Off the rails is awesome.....found a copy in a Burma Hostel and read it to take away the pain of severe food poisoning....good times....sorta
Banged up abroad is great....there are some pretty dumb folks on that show....
Particularly the innocent, dull, fat nerdy dude who get duped by a equally stupid fat slag(they're British) who's addicted to drugs.She's so stupid, she also get's both of themselves thrown in jail...She's the only person I've ever seen in this show I wished actually served out one of those famous life sentences for smuggling in Thailand... |

Hey thingscomearound, I am curious about your friend's story. Did he get caught smuggling and then let off? I ask because it seems unlikely, with Korea's stance on drugs and all. |

Books about Thailand prisons are interesting. I recommend one called 'The Damage Done'. In it, there are crazy stories about the guards beating the shit out of and torturing prisoners and even killing them and the prisoners having to live in the filthiest, nastiest conditions. One punishment I remember reading about the guards made them stand in a vat of exrement for hours.
Makes Korean prison look pretty lightweight by comparison. |

That was the season 4 episode in Peru. The guy (Simon Burke) was later released. But he spend 10 months in an over crowded, cesspool of a prison fending for himself and then another year or so on conditional release (living with a family in Lima) until he was found innocent and allowed to leave the country.
That woman was nasty. |
