Koreans figured out how to gainfully employ thousands of people who were otherwise unemployable in their home countries. Laughing

Think about actual new inventions, not small changes. Name anything that Korea invented, other than a food item.

1 A water clock. Skippedy doodah.
2. Turtle ship. The admiral still got killed.
3. Metal printing press. Arguable.

Anything more?

How about the ondol/ heated floor?

It would depend upon your definition of "Korea". In an area of what is now Siberia, in Russia, there are ruins that have ondol. The area was part of Buyeo, which was one of the precursors to the Goguryeo kingdom.

All you have to do is spend time in the average Korean classroom or Korean office building to know they aren't creative. Life here is pretty regimented and dull.

When companies hire workers who graduated from the same University as the boss, and the culture says they can't disagree with anyone higher up, you're not going to get much creativity.

Koreans are very creative, but many of you guys wouldn't know about it since it's all hidden in the Korean language. If you actually make an effort in participating in some of your school's events, you'd realize Koreans can be very creative.

You mean like the art competitions at the top schools in the country where they judge how well their students can copy a famous painting instead of coming up with original works?

Isn't more important than inventing something, actually distributing it and putting it to use.

It seems that the USA is really good at introducing products to the marketplace, and making it accessible for the middle class. It seems that the goal of US production is to distribute to the middle class.

Europe never seemed concerned with lowering cost to the middle class, but keeping a product "exclusive" and high profit/unit.

So in their history did Korea distribute it's inventions or just keep them for the elite.

I don't think they're not creative, I think their creativity is stifled by an oppressive, overly competitive, conformist encouraging education system.

Take, for example, the most recent English test at my school. There was a question asking which of five adages best described a paragraph. A good student of mine got the question wrong because she interpreted it differently. She was upset and came to me and explained her interpretation. It wasn't as sound as the "correct" answer, but it was still a valid interpretation. Doesn't matter, she chose 3 instead of 4 and blammo, no credit. She'll remember to interpret things the way she's expected to in the future...

This really has an insidious effect on the mind and behavior. And it's not just Korea that has to deal with it.

Korean rice is Filipino.
"Halla-bong" is Malaysian.
Korean "go-chu" hot peppers are South American.
Cherry Blossoms are Japanese.
etc.

I thought this thread was gonna be about that: stating it doesn't matter WHERE things comes from, as a culture adopts some things and makes it their own, that identity isn't undermined by citing historical fact.
