Not sure if this is the right forum, but I have spent several hours trying to book return flights back home, with lots of phone calls & emails to travel agents. (I finished a contract in April, & renewed) Should my Korean school & employer be doing this? I have tried Eva Air, Qantas, Korean Air, & Air China. 'Home', is Brisbane, Australia. The best I could get was a waitlisted seat on August 2 returning on August 23. My school is whining that I should not be spending any time at all on trying to arrange a flight for home leave, but should be doing lesson plans instead.

Depends on your contract.

IF they are paying for the tickets (old contract), then they are ultimately responsible for it.
(be aware that leaving them this responsibility without pushing a bit will end up with it not getting done).

IF they are giving you the "fixed travel allowance instead of reimbursement" then you are responsible for it (on your own time - or desk warming time).

PS. sounds like your co-teacher is a bit of a jerk... mine have always been more than helpful when it came to arranging flights out of Korea (for holidays or other - even during the term and not just after exams were finished).

I'm with GEPIK:

Quote:
4. In the event renewing Employee travels to his/her home country, Employee will be reimbursed for his/her round-trip airfare based on economy class air-fare of the most direct flight available from Incheon to the airport nearest to Employees residence within 2 weeks upon return to Korea.

ie, keep all boarding pass receipts, & paperwork, for the most direct, economy flight.

I've seen far more detailed instructions not in the contract (after requesting more information from my coteacher), photocopied them, but have misplaced them. The VP frequently demands spot cleanups of all desks at my school. Maybe I took it home?

And yes, my previous 2 schools were far more helpful, & organized the ticketing for me.

I was under the impression that most got cash instead of a reimbursement these days.

I know you're asking about who buys the ticket, but I can't help but notice you did not say singapore air. I flew with them through Singapore to Brisbane in January....FYI

Good idea prideof idaho. RBA is the other airline I was thinking of routing through Bangkok. I asked my coteacher in April to let me know asap when I could take leave, & of course in typical Korean fashion they sprung it on me last week. Now there are no seats left.

Nope, no luck with Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Eva Air, or Korean Air. All seats booked out.

How about Air New Zealand, Pacific Air (Fiji) Philippines Airlines or even PNG? (Air 'Nui Guini' or however it's spelt)?

Hi There,

I wonder if they just cancelled all the flights to there lately. Rolling Eyes

I have been trying to get a ticket home there at the end of August and it seems pretty difficult. I have even been trying for two weeks.

Good Luck,

salgichawa, Try Xanadu Travel Agent. I got a confirmed return booking through them with Malaysian Airlines (Gimpo Office). It's a bit of a milk run (Seoul > Kota Kinabalu > KL > Sydney > Brisbane) but I get to spend 3 weeks in Australia, instead of 2, if I'd booked with Korean Airlines.

What happens is that Koreans:

(a) travel in large package tour groups (Chinese, Japanese, & Koreans think it odd for Westerners to travel alone. I've been asked 'don't you worry about your safety traveling alone?')

(b) they book months in advance as they only get summer holidays & Chuseok.

The travel agents buy discounted blocks of 10, 20 30 tickets for a tour group from the airline. Then if theyre not paid for by a certain date the individual seats are sold off. But it's rare for a Korean to make an independent, lone booking.

Have you tried anything to Japan, then Jetstar from Tokyo/Osaka to Australia?

That worked out for me, and cheaply too (tokyo to cairns, cairns to sydney). Apart from enduring Jetstar.
