Is there any risk in sending money home after you've already left the country(for good)? For example, if I wait 6 months for the exchange rate to improve will my bank account still be operational? Using ATM transfers, anyone can easily send my money to my account back home.
Also, I have an international KB card(from 3 years ago), should it still work? What are people's experiences with this? |

also, does anyone know if foreign banks, namely american banks, exchange the "cashier's checks" at korean banks? these are the 1,000,000 or 100,000 won checks i get from Daegu Bank. Can I take these to America to be exchanged? |
No. Don`t take won out of this country and expect banks in the States to exchange it for you. You`ll get a horrible rate or they won`t do it. |

You are in the same boat as me. I've asked around and from what i gather, you can leave your money in your KB account for as long as you want. My plan is the leave here in December, and come back in the middle of next year to get my money. If I transfer it out now, I will lose a huge chunk because of the poor exchange rate (which is improving). |

Any takers for this question? I also really need to know what is the best way to send money because I have many bills to pay back in the states. Any help is greatly appreciated...........
Also, my bank (Shinhan Bank) told me that since I am a foreigner I cannot have an ATM card or do online banking for at least 3 months after opening the account. This is so inconvenient. I am wondering-Is this standard practice with Korean banks or is Shinhan Bank just not very foreigner-friendly? |

Easiest? Yeah, an international bank to bank wire transfer would be the easiest.
Most cost effective is just a math question to compare options. Remember to calculate bank fees for both sending and receiving bank. Also note that banks often have a different exchange rate depending on the method of transfer (rates maybe different check vs electronic transfer). I had no pressing need to get money home right away so traveler's checks worked best for me. |

Has anyone tried opening a KEB account in Canada and linking it to their KEB account in Korea and sending money between the accounts? |

I bank with citi, and supposedly you can transfer money at the atm but they ask for your bank code, which I'm pretty sure isn't the same as the swift code because there's no place to type in letters. Does anyone know about this? |

About not getting an ATM card for three months (Shinhan.)
This is true, and allowed under Korean law, but most banks don't do it. So skip Shinhan. I got an ATM card the same day from KEB.
Best,
