+1 I'll take a little money and a lot of free time
over a lot of money and no free time any day of the week. |

I will be making around 5 mill this month. PS salary + the pay from my extra curricular classes plus a paid camp.
If you include the housing allowance in my salary, I blow through the magical 3mil/month mark, with ease.
Do you get housing allowance, severance, more after schools, paid camps and privates than you can handle, entrance/exit allowance, settlement bonus, etc in China? I'm not trying to start a pissing contest, I'm genuinely curious. |
I'll be making 15 mil this month. Kindy + Hagwon + Afterschool + business classes + pimping service + selling overpriced electronics on here + teaching guys how to meet korean chicks. |
I call BS. |

I know sarcasm is difficult to pick up on the internet but come on you seriously didn't think he wasn't joking around.

Okay, I'm glad you like it. My feelings have swung a bit. I'm certainly glad I've spent so much time here (total of two years), but I'm certain I don't love China.
Shanghai has its advantages over Beijing. |

I will be making approximately 3.1 million won this month |
18 000 RMB is 3.2 million won, so that is pretty close.
All things considered, the amount you would be able to save in Korea would be about the same as what the OP could save in China on his salary. Maybe. What do you think, everyone? |

His money would go farther in Shanghai than it would in Seoul. I'm assuming here that the 3.2 million won figure includes apartment and airfare.
The big bonus to being in China is that you're not a hagwon bitch. There aren't any preposterous penalties for teaching privates. You can buy and own your own property or business. You cannot exactly monetize these advantages, but you can certainly feel them. |

Money does go farther. You can have some pretty cheap days in Shanghai. I set a budge (sort of) of a per day and was surprised at how much I was under after a few weeks.
It's kind of hard to compare. I pretty sure, however, that 3.2 at a public school means a lot more hours of teaching than I have. And I don't have to stay at the school when I'm finished teaching. I'm under contract for 69 hours/week. But I have to work weekends and six days/week twice a year. Two six-week stints.
My job is pretty easy, too. I'm quite surprised. |

Oohhh... Shiny...
I'm actually thinking of heading to China after my 2nd year here. Though, I was under the impression the most you could make would be 10,000 RMB. Is there something I missed? Oh, and how does housing work over there? Do you have to get your own place, or does the school provide you with a room?
Another question... I have a student loan that I'll be paying for the rest of eternity. Is it easy to send money home from China? |

| No, positive stories are generally considered "bragging" by all the losers on this board. |
So by 'positive stories' do you mean, telling everyone you have 6 gas guzzling, polluting cars and posting pictures of the documents to prove it? Yes we all found that very uplifting and inspiring |

With housing, 10,000 would be pretty good. I don't have housing. I don't get housing, but my salary is higher. And my salary isn't 18,000. I making more this month because of overtime. But my base hours are really low. Only 69/month. Averages to 16 a week. So it's easy to get overtime hours. Other similar schools like Disney or EF will pay 13 to 15,000 without housing (base salary), but you under contract for 30 classes/week. The more experience you have, the higher your salary. I think that Disney pay 15,000 for 4 years experience or more. This is in Shanghai. Thing is, Disney tax you on all of that. I don't get taxed on my whole salary. On 15,000, you'll probably have about 2,000 in taxes deducted. 4,800 of your monthly salary isn't taxed and the rest is taxed at 20%. At my job, I think that they count 7000 of my salary as a housing allowance. Housing allowances are not taxable. So at Disney, it sounds like they don't do the housing allowance thing. So anyway, if you make 10,000 and get accomodations, you'll be taxed on 5,200 which is a deduction of 1,040 RMB. So you'd clear 9,000. If you were clearing that with no housing or housing allowance, deduct rent from that. Then it's not so sweet.
Had an interview with one place that offered 12,000 and no taxes. No accomodations. Plus they didn't pay for the phyiscal or visa. Physical is 697 RMB (plus 25 to have it mailed to you or your office). Visa is 400. Then when they recinded their offer back down to 10,000 (original offer, actually), I just laughed.
Long story short, depends on what you can get/who you work for. And where you work for salaries, cost of living. |

You mean 69 hours a month, correct?
That's pretty good- only 17 hours and 15 minutes/week. Sounds like a sweet gig! |
