I'm coming in with the Fall EPIK group and I was wondering if there was anyway I could take my desktop to Korea rather than purchasing a laptop/netbook. According to FedEx shipping a 20lb package from here to Korea would cost me around $220 (without being asked about the size. USPS quotes around $400+ for a 30x24x12 package. UPS is giving me approximately $310. Is there a cheaper option? I can't seem to find any companies that are exclusively ship via boat/land and I'm assuming these are all airbone carriers.

Basically, can this be done cheaper or should I just throw down and get a laptop? I'd really rather have the money as sort of an emergency fund (I need a plane ticket back home because the city is on fire sort of thing).

I usually just check it. Pack it in it's case box with the styrofoam, wrap a good chuck on bubble wrap around and check it in. I once tried dumping the case and packing the hardware for reassembly in the next country but that resulted in a couple of broken components. Excess baggage charges should be a lot less then courier fees

*reassembly.

I would sell it and buy a new one.

You could pull the components out and buy a new case and psu over here. That's probably going to cost around $200 right?

Seriously, just treat yourself.

I found a page on the TSA site that advises against placing electronics in checked baggage: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1052.shtm

I believe that you've done it before but outside of finding a luggage large enough, I don't want to hassle with TSA if there's a problem.

I built this computer myself so it didn't come with an original box with packaging. I do have the monitor's packaging that I saved from when I moved it between home and college. So bringing that is a possibility.

Selling it probably wouldn't yield much more than $300-400. That's assuming I could even find a buyer. Actually according to this: http://www.daileyint.com/hmdpc/second.htm -- it's worth around $250 (original price near $1000) as the system is closing in on three years old.

That said, I'd probably just leave it for my sister or my parents as they could use a new computer.

As for buying new here, I'm not big on paying more than the machine is worth to take it with me. It seems like the sensible choice would be to invest in a laptop or buy new parts once I settle in overseas.

I didn't find an over water shipper but I found a note of someone who used them as apparently, your stuff takes in the neighborhood of two months to arrive.

Also, my number calculations were off on weight an size. A proper box would probably turn out be 24" square and clock in around 50 pounds. That considerably increases the cost of shipping my desktop.

I think I will just buy new parts when I get here. I wanted to replace this build in October anyway.

Built it yourself?

Gut it.
Put the parts in static bags and bubble wrap.
Place in a small cardboard box and pack them in your luggage.
TSA won't care and no-one will pinch it cause they won;t have a clue what it is or what it is for (unlike a computer tower which is pretty obvious as a target for theft).

A new case and power supply here is about $40-50.
High end box and PS for $100 and cheap end, white box cases for about $15.

A full size tower will fit in your typical large size suitcase and weigh in at about 10kg (carried lots of them in my baggage over the years).

A gutted machine will weigh in at about 3kg-4kg

On an international, transpacific flight your baggage allowance is 2 cases of up to 23kg each. No biggie to drag it along.

Where is a good place to buy a high end box and PS? Do you just go to Yongsan or is there a good internet source for buying PC components?

I have seen places on gmarket and the like, but I was curious if there was another place that specializes in computer components.

There's danawa, which isn't actually a shop. It's like Pricespy in NZ, it compiles price from all around the country and provides links to the shops. Whether those shops will play nice with a foreign's ARC is another issue.
Here's their list of cases:

My personal preference is J-tech in the son-in plaza (the place with the big gigabyte sign on it )across the tracks and to the right from yongsan station.

You can also use gmarket or danawa to find them.
