| What benefits will having a MA in TESOL bring me in Korea, and abroad? What kind of jobs will I be able to get? What other benefits will it bring me? |

For starters you wouldn't have to settle for newbie Public School jobs with EPIK, GEPIK, and SMOE, or the countless shady Hagwon jobs. You could instead go for the choice Uni jobs here in Korea making nearly twice what you'd get in a Public School or Hagwon. You'd also get three times the vacation time.
Or even better you could forget Korea all together. With a Masters in TESOL you'd be competitive for a position in the UAE, Oman, or somewhere else in the Persian Gulf making oodles of money and working only seven months per yearly contract. |

why don't more people go for the ma in tesol?
4 months of vacation time sounds like a dream for any type of job. |

An online TESOL is hit or miss. Some schools will take them and others won't. Certainly if you have no other choice its going to add to your resume a ton and I'd say go for it, but if you can do it in person its of course better.
As for the benefits of an MATESOL, besides job flexibility I"d have to say it will just make teaching alot more interesting. I used to like teaching but after an MATESOL I'd have to say I love it.
Additionally, it gives you power to get Uni work in your home country, so you are not stuck living abroad forever or going back to some other work when you return home (if thats your goals) . .
I'd say its not worth the money if you're just looking at a few year stint in Korea or another country and then planning to move on to another career. It would take a few years to pay itself off, and something simpler like a CELTA might be better for a short term career. |

Schools and companies in the Gulf will not accept an online MA. You can peruse the classifieds on the International Job Board and see that schools and companies there require "in-class instruction" for TESOL Certification and Degrees. |

An MA and no teaching experience will land you "a" university job, but hardly one of the choice jobs that pay 4.5 million per month. The vast majority of the uni jobs in Korea pay between 2.2-3.2 million depending on how much overtime you work....even at the schools that require a Masters, you're still looking at 2.5-3.5....yes, there are jobs that pay more, but you will not just walk into one of these jobs simply because you have a degree.
Furthermore...if you've got an MA in TESOL and are not physically in Korea, your chances of landing a university job diminish significantly....you'd be able to possibly land one of the crappier jobs and then move up to a much better school the following year.
More and more people are getting their MA to the point that most of the good jobs can pick and choose between lots of applicants that have the degree and the uni level experience.....but yes, once you're in the country, an MA in most anything and a year experience will more or less guarantee you a university position somewhere in the country unless you are a complete idiot and are incapable of hiding said fact at your job interview. |

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I have been in Korea for 4 years and have been teaching elementary level for all those years. I enjoy teaching and hope that the MA will help me land a university job.
I was offered a job at Sogang University, but it was the Unigwon department and the contract was laughable. Perhaps I should have bitten the bullet and taken it for the experience. |

| no need to get a masters. stay where you are. it is the best job there is. uni jobs sux. it is just not worth it. the PS system is the best for everyone in korea |
