|
|
I have a really good middle school class that I want to reward with some movie time after bookwork. There are only 2 girls and 2 boys in the class. I thought they might enjoy something like Madagascar but animated movies have already been vetoed as too childish. I think if the students are advanced enough to use the word childish correctly, I can certainly respect their decision. Two students like scary movies, one likes funny movies, and one likes action movies. I thought Goonies might work, but I just have two concerns. One is the scene when the kids break the *beep* off the statue and glue it on upside down. The other is the dead body in the ice cream cooler. Is that anything that parents are likely to get upset about? I may be overthinking this, but I'm from the US and those 2 scenes alone would probably lead to me being accused of promoting sex and murder.
Others I am considering:
Independence Day
Jurassic Park
Sneakers (except for one scene that may cause a problem. I don't want to find myself being asked what 'give him head' means. I think the rest of the movie would be fine.)
Willow
I Robot
National Treasure (1 or 2)
Any opinions or other movie suggestions are welcome. |

They will probably only get to watch a few minutes per class. I still have to do work with them. |

is that a list of movies THEY'D like, or YOU'D like?
nice try, but SNEAKERS gave it away... no self-respecting kid in the USA would like that... with all the anti-government sentiment... |

| It's a list of movies I have with content that would be appropriate for that age group. Now, does anyone have anything useful to add? |

| City of Ember is fully kid appropriate and not animated. |

| That's a thought. I have it but I never finished watching it. Maybe the kids would be more interested in it. |

Goonies is a great movie and I think the pros outweigh the cons, but I'd have the same concerns.
Nat'l Treasure is probably the safe bet as it covers a lot of historical ground, and would probably adapt well to in class activities. |

| I showed the Goonies to my MS kids. There is a surprising amount of swearing in that, but overall it was ok. They liked it a lot. Back to the Future was a MASSIVE success. Show that. It's got the attempted rape scene, but I didn't get it when I was a kid, and neither will the kids. |

| I'd second Goonies and National Treasure and Back to the Future are also good choices. If you're concerned about some scenes then just turn off the projector or TV as the movie plays past it, or skip those parts as you said you'll be watching it in pieces. |

| I showed Goonies to my 6th grade students in the States and one of them was so scared of it that he had to sit out in the hallway. The rest of them enjoyed it. |

I've been showing my 5th graders GOONIES for the last month during rainy days on Friday, since we usually do some outdoor activity.
I was, too, quite surprised how many swear words there were in it, especially Sh%$s. Fortunately most of my students didn't even understand it. What they did seem to get a real kick out of were the Shut Ups. Every time someone told Mouth to "Shut up!" the whole class cracked up.
The kids were pretty bored during the first 30 minutes outside of the visual funny stuff since a lot of the dialog was too advanced, but once the Goonies got into the tunnels and Chunk joined Sloth they were glued to the movie and didn't want to go home. We'll probably finish it up in a week or two.
Other movies my students like:
-Beetlejuice
-Ghostbusters
-Wall-E
-Transformers (of course)
-Avatar (double, of course) |

I've showed bits of "White Fang", "Iron Will" when talking about stories that take place in Alaska/the Yukon.
I have also showed bits of "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Theif" when talking about Greek Mythology.
All of them were received fairly well, although the latter was received the best.
I have also showed "The Witches" when the students were reading that novel. You might ask them what novels or books they have read in English and then try to find movie versions of them.
If you are too worried about the content in "Goonies", you can try and look up a TBS-esque edited-for-TV version on Torrent. I don't think a dead body falling out of a freezer is too much for them. They know movies are fake, and Korean dramas and music videos are often rife with violence - "Goonies" violence pales in comparison to some of the things on manistream Korean TV.
But, of course, that all depends on these particular children. |
