I am leaving tomorrow for Korea and I JUST found out that I have to file a tax return?

This is my first job since graduating so I have so idea what to do!

So far what I understand is - I need to send in the 8802 form in order to get a 6166 form....

Is it possible to do this online?

What year are you filing for? Wasn't the tax deadline April 15 for 2009? Otherwise you don't file taxes until after the year is over. Otherwise, I'm kind of confused by your question.

Actually, Americans who live overseas have until June 15th which still means the Fugitive Chicken, in question, is late filing his taxes.

If this is about the 8802, you're not filing a tax return you're applying for a Certificate of US Residency. It's an official letter from the IRS that says, for tax purposes, you are a US citizen and are eligible for any tax treatises that the country you are residing in may have the US IRS.

If you still have time TODAY, print out the form from the IRS website, complete it and mail it in with payment. You can pay for the form online, but you cant do it online, it has to be signed and sent in (either by mail or fax). You can have the form addressed to you in Korea and they will mail the complete certificate to you here when its been finished.

Its a really easy form to complete, but it will take a while for the IRS to process it. I did mine in April of this year and I still have yet to receive it (they said they were backlogged).

You can call them, they're pretty helpful.

IRS Certificate of Residency department - (215) 516 2000

I wish that recruiters would tell candidates about this EARLIER. I wasnt told to apply for mine until the day I was leaving for the airport.

Just to make sure - all ESL teachers need to get this, right? And you mean 8802, instead of 8806?

Thank you so much about the detailed information.

I wasn't told about this AT ALL since I got the job on my own - so no recruiter or employer told me. X(

Ooops...yes...8802 sorry, I'll go back and change it.

Anyway, since it's issued by the IRS, all American ESL teachers should get it. All it does is allow you to not pay Korean income taxes for your first two years here as part of a treaty that Korea has with the USA. That can save you quite a bit of money.

I'm not sure, but I dont think all of the eligible English speaking countries have this treaty with Korea. Some arent even able to get a Tax Residency certificate despite the fact that they do have the treaty.

If you cant fill it out now, you can come to Korea and fax it to the IRS office in the US. Usually it takes about 6 weeks from time of submission to it arriving in the mail in Korea (from what I have been told by others). Again, I applied in April for mine but apparently this year there was a backlog.

This is only true if you are taking a job at a public school or at a university.
