Do you married guys/gals get Korean acquaintances (not friends) giving you unsolicited marriage advice? I usually just nod and ignore (SNIP someone said), but sometimes it's funny. One of my co-workers, who isn't married, tells me what I should have my wife do. I think, you don't know my wife, and you're not married, and you're younger than me!
Things I've been told:
1. Does your wife cook you breakfast? You should have her cook you breakfast.
2. Oh, it's Solal, so you should buy your wife's parents presents. (Um, I did marry her, so maybe I'd know that!)
Anyways, if you guys/gals have any stories, I'm curious |

I will probably marry a Korean simply for the breakfast thing. |

I have been told by several married Korean teachers to break up with my Korean bf when he enters the army. Was told it's what every Korean woman does. Good to know, eh? |

It is archaic to believe that a woman "should" cook her man breakfast. Sometimes I cook breakfast and sometimes she does....to tell the truth usually I do as I am better at cooking breakfast and she generally cooks dinner for the same reason. Neither of which are out of a sense of "duty."
Any man who marries for the sake of having someone to prepare him food should have a seriously long talk with himself in the mirror. As should any woman who marries simply to have a "provider."
To each his own, but living with the subservient house-wife type would drive me to jump off the balcony. |

When he enters the army? How old is your bf? |

"Your husband should be the main breadwinner, because a man gets his identity from how well he can provide for his family."
This from my dear father.
I can't remember the marriage advice from complete strangers, because it's been crowded out by parenting advice. In Korea, that's mostly:
"Isn't your baby cooooold???" (As he is dressed in 4 layers of clothes and wrapped in a blanket.) |

I want advice from a Korean about as much as I want a grenade without a spoon.
Yes, I also get the one about the baby being cold. Someone tells me I should take off my jacket and wrap it around her, even though she is already wearing a jacket and we're going to be outside for 2 minutes or less.
Also when I had a broken arm, people say 'you should be careful'. Holy f off Batman. The worst advice ever. |

If your wife is making anything other than white rice and kimchi every morning, your wife SHOULD NOT be cooking you breakfast! |

Come on folks... This is Korea...
If you're wife isn't making you breakfast you need to pull out your contract and point to the part about "duties and responsibilities not covered under this contract can be delegated at the whim of the employer"...
And on days that you're not hungry and there's nothing to do, she should be sitting in the kitchen anyway, unless she wants to use a sick day or vacation day...
Then again I think I may just have been working for SMOE for too long... |
