Sending E2 Documents to an Agency Before Getting a Contract

So I have been in touch with countless recruitment agencies over the last week or so, and some require that you send over all of your documents before being considered for a position.

If this the norm with agencies? I don't feel comfortable sending all of my documents to one place since I am actively seeking positions with multiple agencies.

Sometimes I feel like I'm just being an overly paranoid "newbie".

There is absolutely no reason to give all your documents in before you have a contract unless you wanna end up working for a Wonderland next to the DMZ and on top of a NK tunnel.

I'm glad to hear that my skepticism isn't unwarranted.

This seems to be the method that Aclipse uses though. They told me that They need to have all of my documents in hand before they even find a position for me.

Long before I sent the actual (physical) documents, I emailed to my recruiter scans of the documents.

I had access to a scanner allowing digital capture of documents in jpg format.

In April, I scanned the following:

original diploma
passport
criminal background check
apostille for the cbc
the seal on the sealed transcript
the health statement with my signature

I emailed all the scans to my recruiter. That was sufficient proof to the recruiter that I had the proper documents.

I just didn't have my letters of reference until May. That was the delay on my end.

Once I got the letters of reference, I scanned them, too, and emailed the scans to the recruiter.

At that point, I had all my documents together and I had a job offer. My recruiter instructed me to have them shipped to her. At the same time, my recruiter shipped to me the contract and Notice of Appointment.

Within 3 days, my recruiter had my documents and I had the contract and NOA. I filled out the visa application and sent the contract, NOA, visa application and my passport to the consulate.

I was in Korea by early June.

Do all recruitment agencies require a letter of recommendation?

I have been in touch with several agencies over the last few weeks and none of them have asked for a letter.

In my case, I was applying for a public school position, requiring two letters of recommendation from academic or professional sources.

Your case may be different, and you might not need them.

1) Apply for as many jobs and with as many recruiters as you can manage. Only use one recruiter for some public school jobs however.

2) Interview as often as possible. Check out the schools, other foreign teachers etc.

3) When you find a suitable position, get a contract, review it, check it over with a lawyer, post it on Dave's, have a friend kibbitz, take it to a fortune teller....

4) Only after you have accepted a position and signed a contract should you send your signed contract and all your documents off to be processed. Until then, you should not send them off to be held hostage by a single recruiter.

Prior to your receiving a contract you only send SCANS of your documents. It is common to send the scans of your degree, passport, crc, photo along with your cover letter and resume.

Do NOT send over your hard copies until you have a contract or you will find yourself locked into that recruiter (unless you have multiples of your hard copies that you are willing to lose).

You only send the hard copies when you have ACCEPTED a position and they begin the actual visa application process (which requires a signed contract).
