I normally like to keep all my electronics and such with me inside my carry-on.....however I'm wondering about my hard drive which is filled with many movies and such that I may/may not have the rights to.....

would this be an issue bringing my hard drive through customs into Korea? Or should I be trying to pack it in my checked baggage??

Shouldn't be a problem. I usually have 2 or 3 320GB hard drives with me when I travel. Never been asked questions about them.

None issue flying into anywhere in Asia.

Bad news however is that the internet speeds here are blistering fast and you will need to buy a couple terabytes of HDD space fairly soon after your arrival to hold all the stuff you will download.

You are beyond safe for quite a few reasons. First, there are so many people going through an airport with storage of some kind (either in a laptop or external) that checking them would be unrealistic. Second, they don't really even have the equipment to be able to check more then a couple externals at a time even if they wanted to. Third there are all kinds of privacy issues involved with data on people's hard drives, between personal information, confidential business files etc. Fourth, it would be a bitch to prove that you DON'T have the rights to your movies.

To be clear, the only way anyone gets caught with illegal files is if they are caught while downloading/uploading them in a country that will prosecute them.

If you've got a mac, partition your hard drive and put the pirated stuff on the mac half.

If they stop you, they're gonna search all your luggage anyway...

I second getting a bigger drive. I wish I brought 3 TBs over instead of 1. Internet speed in Korea (with no throttling and no monthly download caps) is awesome.
