So I've been here for two months now, working for a Public school (BMCOE) in Busan. I still don't seem to have any health insurance, nor have I made any contributions towards it. My school told me I have to wait 3 months, but I need to get a few things sorted out now.
WTF is going on? |

So, you're being screwed. If you have an ARC you can get NHI
right away. I would press this with your employer. Although a
hagwon may pay to have a zit squeezed, I doubt they will cover
30-40 million won if you get hit by a methed-out taxi driver who has
been driving 24 hours straight. And most do. |

You should be covered by NHI on the day your contract started. I didn't get my NHI card til months after I started, but the clinic workers could tell I was covered after showing them my ARC. |

Do you have your ARC yet? They can't officially enroll you nor can they make deductions until you have your ARC. (Same with your NPS)
IF you have your ARC then they should enroll you in the next pay period and you will get a "quarterly" deduction make from your pay.

Yes I have had my ARC for weeks now. So how can I get my NHI card? There are currently no English speaking staff in the school, so I'm kinda on my own. Can I apply somewhere for it? And in the meantime can I just use my ARC card to show that I am eligible for NHI? |

You can't. Your employer has to do it for you.
If you are sick, you will pay the full freight for a doctor visit but after you get enrolled the coverage is retroactive to your entry date (as are your premiums).
You can get a refund (from nhic) for the insured portion of your medical costs after you are enrolled and your premium has been paid.
If you are at a public school - your card (booklet actually) will show up eventually. Unless you are ill, it is not worth picking a fight or making a big fuss over.

That's great, thanks for the knowledge. So if I keep my receipts for appointments and treatments, I can get the insured part back? Or do I have to ask for a certificate or something to that effect from the doctor? |
