They are military recruits. Are you really sure that a conspiracy of that nature would last in Korea?
NK does have a reputation. I mean they are not babes in the woods.

| But North Korea is just a poor country and South Korea is rich (relatively). Why can't they do this at their own expense? Why do they always need the US taxpayer/military to bail them out? Don't they have the balls and organizational ability to defend themselves?? to do it by themselves? |

| I agree with that somewhat. South Korea could be a military powerhouse if it was intent on being one. I think a long term policy of withdrawl while giving the south koreans to adequately arm themselves against norks and chinese would be the best policy. It costs us very little to assist them in this way now though. |

Seriously, I've yet to see any evidence that the majority of Koreans want the US out of SK.
The late President Roh said it best "We are addicted to the US". |

Actually these sort of threats do give me pause. I always assume they know the language we are speaking, but what if they are assuming we are preparing for to retaliate for the cheonan and decide to go balls to the wall and nuke us beforehand? They really do seem to be batshit crazy. On the other hand, if they nuke sk for this, they will just do it anyway for aid, or something else insane. |

It costs us more money than we have, considering that we're many trillions of dollars in debt.
How would we expect to finance a war with China on the other side when we rely on them to keep our pyramid scheme of an economy going? And are they supposed to be scared of us when we can't defeat small bands of men with guns in Afghanistan after nine years and counting? I'm assuming the Chinese (and North Koreans, for that matter) have more men and more advanced weapons than the farmers we're fighting in Afghanistan.
It sounds like we're really not thinking this one through. It seems we never do. |

| I agree we need to cut back spending. Ending the two wars would do that nicely. As for the rest, China for all its industrial power is in no shape to fight a war either, and I seriously doubt that is their intention. All this amounts to a show of force, in order to deter nk (yes i know.. prob not possible) aggression, and keep our allies morale up (or at least their markets). |

If Pyongyang starts anything, it will be their end. And they ought to know that.
It's easy to dismiss them as insane, but they're quite rational if they've managed to keep their unfavorable regime together for this long. They'll do what it takes to maintain their comfortable position of power rather than throw it all away for their anti-Western "ideals." |
