This happened in Japan, but can easily happen here.

A foreign English teacher in charge of an English class at Shumei Yachiyo Junior High School is facing criticism after it emerged that the teacher drew pictures of a person being hung (ala the game "Hangman") when students answered incorrectly in class. In 2008, a student at the school hung himself, but the teacher allegedly continued using the game regardless.
The parents of the student who killed himself, meanwhile, are angry. "This kind of teaching is a problem," they have said.
The testimony of several current and former students led to the discovery. According to the students, since at least 2007, the teacher has used the drawings on the blackboard, adding a line and circle to the picture every time a student can't answer a question or answers a question incorrectly, gradually forming a complete picture that resembles a person who has been hung.
According to the parents of the third-year junior high student who hung himself on school grounds in November 2008, in his school notes there were also pictures that looked like hanging victims. At the wake for their son, the parents showed the picture they had found to their son's friend, who told them that it resembled pictures drawn by the English teacher in class, the parents say.
...
On the pictures resembling hangman, the parents said, "Even if it was a joke, the fact that it's being done in a classroom is itself a problem. We were shocked to hear that it continued even after our son's suicide." |
If Japanese schools are anything like Korean (I only taught at an ekaiwa there) then there is a good chance the teacher didn't even know a student committed suicide.
English teacher used "hangman"-like game at school where student hung himself |

I can definitely see this happening in Korea. The habit of Korean Helicopter Moms is blame everyone but themselves when it comes to their parental shortcomings. If any tragedy happened to their children, they'd be pointing the finger at the easiest person to blame, which in this case would be the NET.

I taught with JET for a couple of years. They're exactly like schools in Korea in keeping NETs in the dark in many matters. I will admit they're VERY good with giving you the school's annual schedule. Holidays are known months in advance, allowing NETs ample time to plan their vacations. Also, one doesn't have to deal with the infamous last minute announcements or changes in scheduling we have in Korea. |

Just use some other kind of visual if you are worried about this. I remember one of my elementary school teachers drawing some sort of monster instead. |

I haven't played hangman with my classes in a while. I don't think the younger kids make the connection but you are basically drawing a hanging victim on the board. If I were the teacher in that school, I wouldn't have continued using the game. As other posters have said, he might not have know about it, though. I had another teacher tell me that parents know that hangman is a time killer anyway. I give out word searches and crosswords if I need an activity at the end of class. |

Instead of Hangman, play "Ghost" or "Ugly Flower". Draw parts of the ghost/flower until it's complete. With Ghost, you give the vowels in the answer beforehand.
In my last hagwon, the Korean teacher sometimes played Hangman with the children. It's not really a big deal. |

It's more about how some parents are attacking the foreign teacher for their child's suicide. I posted this because of the ridiculousness of the it all.
For the record, I never play hangman. |

I guess they edited the article after publishing it: hung now reads hanged. |

I thought only sheltered American liberal creeps or lawyers could go to the extent of twisting reality this far to make some kind of point and create a victim, but apparently I have been completely mistaken. I'll go with it being an east-west thing. |

Japan is next on the list to be conquered my "political Correctness," if the Pre-Clinton Democratic party has any say in world domination....
Say what you want about Bill, but he pushed a PC world to the back burner in the early 90s.... he made taking a BJ from a heifer also socially acceptable, so he wasn't the greatest American president... but he had his strong points... |

I play hangman with the students sometimes. It's always at the end of class as a reward for having done something. I try to relate the vocab to the lesson.
When I play it, we always have at least 2 teams - i.e. more than one hangman being drawn. It adds a competitive nature to the game and motivates them more.
Like in a lot of Asia, everyone looks for a scapegoat for every problem that comes up. (Hence one of the main reasons I avoid socializing with my co-workers.) There are so many absurd things that they COULD try to blame you for. I'm not going to worry about playing hangman. |

For my defense I'd be like, "I was trying to encourage homicide, not suicide!" |

Are you sure the article is not some sort of Satire like the Onion or Dokdo is Ours.
This is just beyond silly. Unless the teacher was drawing really graphic pictures this would be almost a non issue. |
