I think he 'sucks' but not because he is Korean. I think he is a bloody useless bugger - but as you yourself have pointed out, the big players may well prefer someone ineffectual.

People can't even name one UN secretary general's name who was actually useful ever since the establishment of UN.

Fact that the reporter and the article moans and cries about Ban's work on UN is a complete joke.

The UN is not a complete joke.

Duch, who headed the Tuol Sleng detention centre in which at least 14000 people where executed, has just been sentenced to 35 years in gaol. This trial would never have taken place but for the UN, which forced it on the reluctant Cambodian leadership.

I disagree that the UN is useless. The UN has helped with the vaccination of many people. It has helped when it comes to peacekeeping in certain countries. It has helped more health issues. It has provided aid for Palestinians who need it and other refugees in the world.

Ban Ki Moon is presiding over a UN accused of corruption just as his predecessors were. The difference is he seems more unpopular amongst the people he works with when compared to Boutros Ghali, Kofi Anan, and Javier Perez De Cuellar. He seems too afraid to offend anyone or stand behind international law. He seems even worse than the others to me.
I, at least, liked something about Kofi Anan, though there was corruption. I can't say I like Ban Ki Moon's personality, even, and he doesn't seem to even really pretend to support international law or seem to be some kind of authority even in word. He seems, basically, useless even compared to his predecessors.

I don't think the UN is useless in every sphere.

I agree, Adventurer. And I think the idea of the UN was a good one. But it is only as good as its members allow it to be. When it first began, it was run in the interests of the most powerful nations. As developing nations got more of a say, nations like the US became less enamored of it. That's partly why so many Americans are encouraged to sneer at it.

It's certainly a flawed organisation, but I would like to see that addressed, rather than just throwing the baby out with the bath water.
