You're completely unaware of the connection he has in the national government, then?

Well, he's a bit more and a bit worse than your average, run-of-the-mill racist. Here is Ben Wagner's presentation for the National Human Rights Commission of Korea.

20,000 are the people registered at the site I think. I guarantee that 90% of those have since gone back to playing Starcraft or getting drunk.

I bet the actual in person membership is far lower.

Thanks for the clarification. I doubt that there are many active members seeking out those bad foreigners.

It is common practice in Korea for teachers to pay bribes for full time positions. As far as i know paying a bribe is illegal, and that would pretty much say that most Korean teachers are unqualified. I don't like to sound petty, but if a group of us were to follow Koreans around and investigate their activities, there would be many shocking stories.

As far as I know, his sole connection is that he attended one meeting at which the new visa regulations were discussed, a number of years ago. If there have been any further connections established between him and the government, I have yet to hear about them.

A few months back, I started a thread inviting people to post further evidence of AES' alleged rise to prominence. As that thread quickly disappeared into oblivion, and as far as I know has not been resurrected, I'm going to assume that Lee's career as a Superstar Government Advisor has come to a complete standstill.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Lee Eun Ung is a self-glorified "paparazzi", who happens to have a website and managed to swing one meeting with the government because he was writing about an issue that had suddenly become a concern. He does seem to have a following on Dave's, though.

I think the foreigners voice has begun to be heard though, even if its only via ATEK interviews in english-language papers.

He's no David Duke, though on a small Korean scale, I suppose he kind of could be.

Hand: For a long-timer, you seem astonishingly naive about the anti-foreigner(esp. Westerner)sentiment that, though long standing, has sky rocketed in the last few years. Did you read the link to Ben Wagner's presentation, above?

Even if one were to believe that the AES only had one kick at the can to bend the ROK government's ear(and I believe it's far more), wouldn't that be one kick at the can too many?

I think this Lee guy has a minsiter or just an MP as a fan, and he used information provided by Lee in order to create a stir. Koreans often seem to follow in the masses with wrong information, and when this Lee guy gets some air play, it's the masses that follow blindly. I wouldn't be too concerned about the elected officials as they are not too easily swayed with such figures, and know that there could be a backlash. Truth be told, and from what I'm hearing lately, there really seems to be a much greater problem with perverted teachers in Korean than with foreign ones.

Yes, but they are Korean. All others are intruders!

Right because the loud speaker trucks that periodically drive outside my school are totally concerned with English teachers and foreigners and not with taxes/public funding/corruption/God/etc.

The Koreans have way more axes to grind with each other before us. Sorry, but we aren't at the center of their attention. I know, I know, we should be but well, we aren't.

And I'm sorry for the mixed up words. I meant to say that the greater problem lies with the Korean teachers, as this is what I have been told. Korean parents know this, but would be quick to use us foreigners as scapegoats.

I've heard way more stories of korean professors/ managers etc abusing their charges than I have of foreigners.

But yeah, korean society is designed to be unable to correct or criticise its own wrongdoers. Foreigners exist outside of that system though and thus make easy targets. Throw in the nationalism and the fact that being anti-foreign is one of the last few things left that Koreans can bond together over.
There are no potential adverse social consequences for blaming outsiders.

I think it's more because when dealing with a foreigner the solutions is pretty easy, kick the guy out of the country. Also, they can advocate throwing up more roadblocks before letting people into the country. With a Korean it's more complicated and you can't kick a guy out of his own country.
