What universities are the best with respect to pay and benefits (housing, holidays, flights, year-end bouns, paid/optional winter/summer camps)?

Is it just me, or is the pay for a lot of these jobs really low. Working for SMOE with a Masters pays 2.6 plus housing plus pension. You'd think universities would pay more than public school. A lot of them have crap vacation, too.

Not only that, but many university benefits have deteriorated since the information was compiled and the link published a year and a half ago.

Is it harder to get a job at a University? I am currently teaching elementary students but think that at some point my patience will run low and at the completion of my contract want to try my hand at something else. I would really like to try teaching University students and adults. How hard is it to get a job? I have an elementary teaching certificate in the states, but not much experience teaching adults. What do you recommend?

F.Y.I: The base salary number posted on the 2010 list for the school I work at is off by about 400,000W (i.e. his number is 400,000 lower than what I earn); point is, some of those other quotes may also be way off.

People questioning "how some unis can pay such low base salaries": bear in mind, obviously, the number of teaching hours is usually very low and thus the pay/hour - high (vs. a "normal" job e.g. SMOE. Furthermore, we are not required to sit on campus when we are not teaching. You come and go as you please). In addition, you often get 4+ months paid vacation, and many schools offer tons of opportunities to work extra classes and perform miscellaneous tasks on campus to fill out all that free time in the day. e.g. in July, since I elected not to take the summer off, I pulled in an extra 3.1 million in overtime. It adds up.

So "yes," university jobs can still be very lucrative; you need to think beyond the base salary to truly realize the benefits.

That being said, the good jobs are becoming more and more difficult to attain. We recently had PhD's with college teaching experience apply for an opening.

The base salary for uni jobs isn't great, but the chance for teaching during the holidays is a real perk. A friend of mine is doing a summer camp, 3 weeks, 7 days a week, live on campus, but he'll pull in an extra 4.5 million. Then he'll go home for a month. So sure I make more as a base salary, but with at least 6 million extra a year in OT, he quickly catches up to me. On top of that, he gets a full 2 months to run around doing NOTHING. I only get 2 weeks off. In the end, he's better off. Plus his resume looks better than mine.

My uni info there is also about 400,000 less than what I currently make. Plus, base pay and what I make is different. I teach at least two extra classes, sometimes three a semester, which is more money. Don't forget working during the breaks, tutoring other profs, and even teaching sports. It all adds up.

How do the base salary numbers differ for visiting professors as opposed to language instructors? I have two master's degrees (English Literature and Education) and extensive teaching experience, so I'm aiming for a professorial position. (I'm in Korea already, a couple of months, teaching at an excellent adult hagwon to get my feet wet.)

It would be so easy to set up a simple enter your info about your school page. Anonymous. Users enter the info. and it is compiled under school/university name in a directory. Searchable through that name.

I guess I have another project to do but I think will help others. Could also be country based. Not a lot of work (a few days)....

For my place of employment the list is .8 mil off and incorrect about much else.... (in the 2009 list).
