I have a good laptop I bought a year ago by HP. Dont know the specs right now but it runs great.
I want to connect it to a big tv, 32-42". What specs matter in having excellent quality and display? Can I just get any lcd hd LG tv I see on sell? Thanks in advance |

A friend of mine got a TV here (I'm sorry I don't know the specific model, but it's an LG) and he's got it set up so that his computer streams the media to his TV wirellessly. Very cool stuff. We use the standard VGA connection, but our computers are kind of old. I think new computers have an HDMI connection to talk to your computer. Check the sides, it'll be labelled. |

I used to use svideo out and then getting a headphone to rca link and then going to desktop and telling it to extend my screen. Some tvs also have vga connections now making it much easier just to use a common monitor connection and then extending it through your desktop commands, which is where you change resolution or a wallpaper. |

I'd be 99% sure any new flat screen TV (LCD/Plasma) has an input on the back called VGA or DSUB, this is the standard 15pin connector that old CRT monitors used to connect to PCs before they went to DVI and HDMI
DSUB is ok quiality wise,
99% of notebooks have a DSUB connector, check yours now, you usually turn it on/off by pressing a function button and a number button (eg 7 or 8 ) at the same time, look for a picture of a tv/lcd on it to toggle between.
a newer notebook will have HDMI as will a newer tv, this will make connecting the two slightly easier, but DSUB/VGA (same thing) is cool too.

send the girl my way with whatever electrical goods she has left
and no offence, but if you don't know how to plug a notebook into a tv, is a wireless solution really what you need to be messing with? |

I had to chuckle a bit as well. The part about "talking" with the tv just screams that the OP is a bit too old school. |

I just never had the need to learn about it. Im pretty sure its not hard to figure out, just wanted to ask which TV would be best.
And now the wireless method has my interest so its just a matter of where to get it. Thanks |

Would using an HDMI make the quality better than VGA/VGA? Do you have any idea why the TV is not getting recognized?
When I plug it into the TV my laptop makes the sound that something is plugged in but doesnt recognize it and the tv does not show the option to change to PC. |

Are you using the standard VGA cable, the one that looks like a monitor cable?
Its pretty simple, just plug one end into your laptop, and the other end into the TV.
Use the TV remote to navigate to the VGA or PC input.
Next, check your laptop for two buttons, a Function button (Can be labled as function, or fn, usually around the lower left area near the shift key), and the corrosponding key. Your keyboard should be labled as to what buttons do when Function is depressed, check your F1 - F12 keys, you are looking for something like "CRT/LCD or a picture of a computer/tv, something that lets you know it changes between monitor and tv. Hold the Fn key, then hit the display swap key and it should switch the display to the TV. Some laptops have many settings so you may have to cycle through them.
To setup sound, plug some speakers into the headphone jack of your laptop.

An HDMI cable won't necessairly improve resolution, but it pipes sound through to the TV, and may make the setup process a little easier. |
