Hi,

I just got a Galaxy S yesterday and it is the first smart phone, hell, the first NICE phone I've ever had.

I'm just wondering if there are any options I should switch to off in order to avoid incurring any extra charges. According to my plan, I have 1gb of data to burn once a month; of course, I have no idea how much that is.

Should my phone always be connected to the web wherever I am?

Yeah, I'm really clueless about phones.

Thanks

If you're doing light browsing, e-mail, news reading, and twitter, you'll get nowhere near your limit. The limit gets difficult if you're doing any video streaming like youtube or downloading huge files.

I've had my Desire for 2 months now and I've used a total of about 350MB out of my 1GB limit. I'm actually thinking I'll downgrade my plan since I don't need so much.

Thank you! What you mentioned pretty much encompasses anything I do on the phone. Appreciate the response.

Just bummed to discover the ban on games in the Market Sad

To get around that, download the AppBrain market and the Fast Net Download apps. These allow you to surf the market via your web browser and download directly from there. You can then get any app available.

I've had a couple of glitches, like the downloads only start when I download something else from the market on the phone.

Go to the Android market and download 3d Watchdog. It will keep track of how much data you have used.

Text messaging:
If you have a significant other that you text message a lot, seeing as you don't have that many on the data plan, sign up for the 5,000 text messages for 6k won a month for their number.

Games:
Download ApkInstaller from the Android market. Go to this website's thread:

Code:
http://tehparadox.com/forum/f43/collection-games-android-960826/

Download any game you like. Plug your phone into your computer. Drag the game to your phone and then start the ApkInstaller program. Find the game you just added and click on it. It will install the game for you.

Hope this helps.

A gig is insane. You will be doing well to get through that. I have 500mb and I never get close to using it. I use Dropbox to sync my music, and even syncing over 3G from time to time, I don't use more than 500MB.

Enjoying your first smartphone, BB? You're like me then...I just got the Galaxy S a couple of months ago. Loving it.

Basically, as said before, the 2 key ways to avoid surplus data charges is,

1. stay connected to a hotspot (wireless) as much as possible.......

2. don't download or stream video or music when you can only connect to 3G.......only do that stuff when you have a wireless connection.

Has anyone gone over their band width? How much does it sting you?

Honestly, I would trade in some bandwidth for more texts. I usually just use my 200 mins talk time by the end of the month, but I smash through the 200 text barrier within the first week. The IM style text interface doesn't help that. I have no idea how much extra texts cost. It doesn't seem like that much.

I don't have a smart phone and I'm not sure if text costs are the same. For my plan each text ranges in price from 30 to 50 won depending on length.

If you're using SK all of this information is on their website. For the all in one plans the charges for going over the limit are as follows...

Data 0.025 won per 0.5 kilobyte (works out to 50 won per megabyte)

Texts are 20 won each, long texts 30 won, picture/video messages 100 won

Calls are 1.8 won per second (108 won per minute)

If you're consistently going over the text limit, you can't trade your bandwidth for texts, but you can sign up for an add-on text plan to get more messages at a discount. There are several options for this.

Message light: costs 2,000 won per month, allows you to make 2,400 worth of messages. (for example 120 regular texts, or 80 long texts, or 24 picture messages or any mix of the 3) This gives you a slight discount. The other plans work basically the same way, but the higher the price the bigger the discount gets.

Message regular: costs 5,000 won per month gives you 7,500 worth of messages.

Message premium: costs 8,000 won per month gives you 15,000 worth of messages.

Message premium 1200: costs 12,000 per month gives you 24,000 worth of messages.

There's also a "couple message" plan which costs 6,000 won per month and let's you send 5,000 texts per month to any one number that you choose. I guess it's a good deal if you send a hundred messages a day to the same person.

Cheers for that. Going over your band width seems trivially inexpensive to me. I might look into the texts to one person plan. I probably send 1000 a month to my girlfriend. A 100 to my best mate and 100 to everyone else.

The way texting is set up on a smart phone, it's more like IMing than texting. Makes it easy to fire off more texts than you normally would.
