Anyone know the cheapest and fastest way to get to Luang Prabang (Laos) from Seoul?
Also would appreciate tips on Seoul to Hoi An (Vietnam). |

Head to Bangkok first, then on to Laos.
As for Hoi An, whichever of the two biggies is cheaper first, usually being Hanoi. |

Hoi An is nice and totally worth the trip.
We went to Luang Prabang via Hanoi on VietNam Airlines last winter. It was reasonably priced but not what I'd consider cheap. Try 072.com. They might have something. |

Tickets to Bangkok from Seoul are affordable.
But Bangkok to Luang Prabang is basically $300 USD per person -- more expensive than the Seoul - Bangkok segment.
I heard VV is one big cluster f*ck of Israeli and assorted other males all floating around watching American sitcoms by the river. Sounds like a total nightmare. |

Bangkok or Hong Kong and overland from there. Bangkok is an infinitely easier trip than HK, but getting to LP is either going to be expensive or grueling from Bangkok. I took the flight from BKK to LP in February of '09 and, if I remember correctly, it was around $190 US one way. If you go overland it's much, much cheaper, but it's something like 16 hours to get from Bangkok to Vientiane, and from Vientiane it's something like twelve hours to get to Louang Phrabang. I love Louang Phrabang, but this is not a good trip to do in a short time unless you've got a lot of money to burn.
As for the Vietnam option, from what I can tell flights from Korea to Vietnam tend to be ludicrously expensive compared to going to Bangkok, and BKK is closer than either of the major airports in Vietnam are going to get you (not that Hanoi's is really a major airport).
Vang Vieng makes Khaosan Road seem like a temple stay. |

Hahaha! I was there last yeah and and that's pretty much exactly what it was. People taking drugs and watching american sitcoms then floating down the river drinking. It's much better than Khaosan road though, that place is like Itaewon on a Sat at 4am 24/7. |

Luang Prabang is probably my favourite place on earth. Beautiful, friendly, cheap and completely chilled out.
As for flights, you might find it cheaper/easier to get to the capital city Vientiane first and then get a flight to Luang Prabang. |

It certain seems to have it all based on my research:
French colonial architecture; wonderful unspoiled nature all around; modern amenities combined with local, authentic charm; romantic & atmospheric streets, neighborhoods, and surroundings; and great Asian cuisine at an affordable price.
What do you think it might be like to live in Luang Prabang for anywhere between 2-4 months each year? Too boring? |

French colonial architecture; wonderful unspoiled nature all around; modern amenities combined with local, authentic charm; romantic & atmospheric streets, neighborhoods, and surroundings; and great Asian cuisine at an affordable price.

That about sums it up 
Depends on the sort of person you are really, I managed to spend a fortnight there by myself on a shoestring budget (around $20 a day I think, great food+accom inclusive) without getting bored in the slightest. Spent my days wandering the backstreet markets and exploring temples and then sat overlooking the stunning Mekong River each evening with a couple of BeerLao. Bliss.
If you've got a bigger budget then there's countless river trips, hikes, bike rides, caves and surrounding villages to keep you occupied too. So long as you were to pace yourself I think a few months is pretty doable, especially if you're with friends or a significant other.
In fact, I really ought to check out what the market for ESL teachers is like in Laos... |

Mmm, you're right but overblowing it. That's pretty much what it is, yeah, but everyone's really relaxed. It's not like Khaosarn road where there's music blaring and what not. Also, screw it, smoking a J and floating on that river is a good assed time. |

| I'm seeing Bangkok for $558 on China Eastern Airlines through Obitz leaving this Saturday and returning back to Seoul 2 weeks later. Flights are still easily available on English sites. So this is it if you want a last minute SE Asia trip. It's twice as much to fly to Luang Prabang, but I seen 1,000,000 won to fly Thai Airways to Vientiene. I'm kinda concerned about the humid hot stormy weather leaving a lot to be desired. It would probably be exceptionally nice weather down there during our Winter. |
