Hi everyone,
I think the title pretty much says it all. Anyone know the best way to ship a macbook back to the States?
Thanks |

As carry-on baggage.
Nothing else is really cost effective AND secure.
Express mail (EMS)
http://www.koreapost.go.kr/eng/index.jsp is probably the most affordable but you are still looking at close to 200k (EMS premium) for the weight of it or just over 100k for basic EMS service. (weight based on 10kg packaged weight)

I shipped a laptop a couple years ago. Just went to the post office, had them pack it up (I had the original box, but they packed it again) and ship it. I think it cost 50,000.
Oh, I took the hard drive out as well.[/list] |

The rule is, "Never ship a laptop." Should you be unable to follow that rule, you can pack the laptop in its original factory packaging. If it is not in factory packaging, then regardless of how much insurance you buy on the freight, the expediter will not pay for it. There are exceptions (primarily with UPS, FedEx, and DHL) where you can have "Guaranteed" pack and ship, so that if their franchise packages it, insurance will be paid regardless of the packaging. |

Thanks for the responses. Normally I wouldn't consider shipping it, but I'm traveling for 3 months after my contract is up. I figured it was better to ship it than to carry it/worry about it getting stolen somewhere in SE Asia. |

Every backpacker I've met keeps their laptop handy. I'd just keep it anyway, you never know when it'll be handy on the road. It really is more useful to have that inconvenient to pack and carry. just slip in on the side of your pack and forget this shipping silliness. |

You cannot ship it. Other than via DHL. I tried shipping my Dell last year when it died so that I can get it fixed via warrenty, but the post office told me computers were "prohibited contraband" Finally I waited a few months till a friend went home and sent it with him.
DHL is the best...but it's super expensive. |

I called UPS today to find out about shipping my 17 inch Macbook to Australia. It weighs about 3.6kg in the protective bag. They quoted me 140,000 to ship it and an additional 16,000 to have it insured to the value of $3500 Australian Dollars. I'm still checking out other avenues so didn't go ahead with it but they would have sent someone out to me to pick it up in a couple of hours and would have had it delivered to Australia by the 26th of this month.
Another friend of mine sent her (smaller) laptop via EMS to the UK a couple of months ago for 70,000. It was uninsured.
I'm going to call around tomorrow and see if I can find any other prices.
I'll post what I find out. |

If you have important files on it, you might want to back them up first and then ship the backup separately. |

I'm looking into shipping my Macbook back to the states and I've read that you can't ship it w/ the battery.
Does anyone know about this? I don't care if I have to take the battery out and buy one when I get home because I was planning on replacing it anyway. But if I don't have to I'd rather not. Are batteries on the restricted list?
re:cursive- w/ UPS do you pack it yourself or do they do it for you? |

I just called DHL and their quote for the same service (17 inch macbook to Australia) was 281,231 with an additional $30USD for insurance to the value of $3500AUD. They quoted a delivery time of 2 days plus any time in customs at the other end.
Coming in at under half the price, it would seem that UPS is the better of the two services.
eac02:
Neither UPS or DHL will pack it for you. Both of them told me that they send someone out to you, take what you give them and off it goes. You are responsible for packing it and the total weight, size and cost is calculated relative to the entire package not the contents. It seems strange that they don't pack it seeing as they have to pay if it is damaged but that is their policy.
The person and DHL told me that if you are shipping it with the battery or even sending a battery by itself you need to provide a "MSTS document" which apparently you must obtain from the manufacturer of the battery. It is a safety document ensuring that the battery is safe for air transport. I haven't looked into getting this yet but I am hoping it is a case of simply going to the Apple service centre.
Hope that helps. |

I had heard this as well from other teachers. But I also heard of someone packaging one in an unmarked box and wrapping it so well that the PO took it as it was, not knowing it was a computer.
I am thinking about doing that with my 23" monitor. Do monitors fall under the "prohibited contraband" heading? |

I thought about shipping my laptop home (traveling for a month and a half after I leave) but then I realized that I could replace it for only a little more than it costs to mail it home. |
