English teacher accused of sexual assault
By Park Si-soo
Staff reporter
A native English teacher was detained on suspicion of raping a barmaid, police said Sunday.
According to police, an America citizen, a native English teacher at a private language institute, is accused of sexually assaulting a Korean barmaid in a public restroom of a building in Dunsan-dong, Daejeon, at 3 a.m. Saturday.
Police said the victim didnt want the investigation to go further in exchange for compensation from the American.
Under the law, police investigations into a rape case can only continue with the victims approval, meaning that the probe must be halted.
But police will inform the Americans workplace of the case to hold the offender accountable for his crime.
Earlier, a British man working in Seoul as a native English teacher was caught using his camcorder-functioned cell phone to record images of womens underwear at Gangnam subway station, southern Seoul.
The 28-year-old was confirmed to have worked as an English teacher at an elementary school in Mapo, Seoul, police said. Police found nearly 100 photos and two other video clips showing unidentified womens underwear on his phone.

What? How do the police know it was rape? Did they catch the whole thing on cctv? Witnesses? Crime? Who's to judge? Where's the conviction? Compensation? For what, exactly? This is so messed up. Sounds like a set up. |

The police are assuming he is guilty and informing his workplace to "make sure he is punished"??? |

| And people complain when some poster mentions how biased the police tend to be. |

the second story is a good lesson, though.... 'upskirting is frowned upon in Korea.' |

Oh great, hasn't been convicted but treating him like a criminal. And here in Korea, where they go to great lengths to protect the identity of the accused...
And, how on earth is the upskirting video related to this, other than they're both English teachers... Oh wait... |

Yup. My friend e-mailed me about this article. Nice. And I think it was like frontpage news. Basically, it's a "Look at all the problems native teachers are causing" article/example. Pretty bad. That's like saying "A black man did this last night and another black man did that. At around the same time. Black man."
I wonder if any Koreans got into trouble that night. And got into trouble at around the same time as each other.
But anyway.... Yup. Person can go to the police and accuse you of something, try to have you pay them money for damages instead of pursuing an investigation, you refuse to pay and they hold you in jail (and tell you that you'll be held in jail if you don't pay the "victim"), not be charged and still get a fine even if you aren't charged with anything AND/OR they contact your workplace to inform them of your unproved wrongdoings. Even if you didn't do anything.
Nice. Uh.

They didn't mention his race, but yes, they did point out his profession. However, that's newsworthy in Korea, to our detriment. Guy number two in particular, taking panty pics, makes potential problems for the whole teacher community.

In Korea, financial compensation is very common. I know someone whose brother (Korean) was charged with sexual assault and the family ended up paying almost 60 mil to fix it. The girl who made the claim (and her family, who had pushed her into being sexually available!!) was very clearly out for money. This aspect of Korean law is extremely problematic because it could and does lead to extortion and corruption. Sexual assault and rape, though, are in the newspapers in the US all the time too, the victim's name withheld, regardless of whether it really happened or not. Men lose their jobs there too and are left with an arrest record, even if the whole thing turns out to be bogus. |

Too much detail missing from the original story...
Was the "public restroom" the male or female room - could make a huge difference in my opinion.
Was it "rape" or "sexual assault"? If there is a different definition in Korean law for it.
What precisely is the job description of the "bar maid" - and what sort of establishment are we talking about?
And I know this is unlikely, but the way the Gangnam arrest was described... it might be just possible that the guy was taking pictures of "women's underwear" on display in one of the stores of the underground mall? It's not mentioned that said underwear was in any way attached to a female body. And I never get it why it is illegal (though I think it is delightfully sick) to snap a girl's bottom in granny whites but perfectly normal to do the same on the beach with girls wearing g-string tangas... never mind.
And - don't get this wrong, it's just an idea I have in my head - the woman is being financially compensated for a sexual act now? One more possible scenario... lousy piece of journalism, as expected. |

Im guessing the guy was a kyopo! but that doesn't make good journalism here , so they make it more ambiguous and say, American citizen.. native English teacher!...
how about that KOREAN GUY who kidnapped that elementary school girl in ANSAN last week and held her for ransom... there's a story...
I mean come on.. A guy trying to get laid in a bar at 3am and trying to hard... thats news??? that's a normal weekend anywhere in the world hahahahaahahah
It's like the press are out to find anything negative a foreigner does here...
anyone know the anniversary of the virginiatech massacre?
we should hold a vigil downtown.. to remember the innocent Americans who were murdered that day, by the Korean gunman!

Yeah, somebody says they were sexually assaulted so they obviously weren't!
OR:
Perhaps it happened, but a Korean guy has raped somebody too, so why is everybody getting down on the poor foreign guy?
Jesus, Itaewonguy. Use your f-ing brain. Should something not be in the news because it is not a number one, grade-A shocking case? The newspaper would be pretty thin otherwise. Do you really think that ransom thing is being eclipsed by this foreigner rape story? DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT?????
Sometimes looking at this board makes me sick to my stomach. |

What are you blubbering about sulperman? No one is saying that it couldn't have been sexual assault or rape. The point is that there isn't enough evidence one way or another to come to any conclusions. It becomes he said she said--in a bar, at 3 in the morning! You call that justice? |

It sounds like people ARE jumping to take the side of the guy over the woman who works at a bar. A guy who was no doubt drunk at 3 am in a bar. I am not saying anything happened for sure. But why on earth would people automatically defend someone in that situation? I have been piss drunk in a bar at 3am a million times, but have never been accused of sexual assault.
Have you?
Don't you imagine that for a claim of that type to be made that something FAR out of the ordinary must have happened? That is my first thought. Why do so many people automatically have the opposite thought?
Perhaps there is nothing to it, but I simply do not understand why so many people would assume that something shady is up right off the bat. |
