I've had quite a bit of free time here and I've watched both of them numerous times.

Which one do you prefer?

I'm torn. The character development in both is great, but if you had to pick just one, which one would it be?

For me, I'm going with The Wire.

Also, who are your favorite characters from each?

The Wire: Stringer Bell
Sopranos: Paulie Walnuts!

I have never seen the wire but I have heard good things about the show. I love the Sopranos (watched all six seasons three times through). As for my favorite character, I would say it is a tie between Paulie Gualtieri and Salvatore Bonpensiero.

Christ, it's like Sophie's Choice!

If I had to pick one to watch for the rest of my life, I'd probably go with the Sopranos. The Wire is outstanding, but it's also often really heavygoing and depressing - whereas Sopranos is something you can watch to have a good time.

Best characters?

The Wire: Either Clay Davis or Omar
Sopranoes: Paulie.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitt I personally liked Bodie and Mc Nutty. Bubbles transformation from a dope fiend to a cleaned up good guy is the best supporting character subplot of any show IMO

The Sopranos!! I'm watching the series again for like the 14th time and each time just gets better and better. Everytime you watch it you feel differently about the characters. As far as my favorite character, I think I'd have to say Christopher (although I do love Paulie, but he doesn't have a lot of character development over the years). Christopher has so many demons, and I really like that he questions the direction his life is going.

Haha, Clay Davis is such a scumbag. Yeah, that's what I really liked about The Wire. So many stories that were all connected together.

The wire gets my vote hands down. The sopranos is decent, but I just never really cared about Tony's family, and I was really annoyed by Christopher as well as Ralph.

The best character in the wire was Omar.

Indeed........

I think Bunk gets a vote as well, his character was hilarious.

I like how they never really got into the aspect of the Police Commissioner Rawls just randomly sitting at the gay bar in Season 3. It was just whatever...

Don't forget about Lester either, he was great.

The Sopranos rewards repeat viewing much, much more than The Wire imo. The characters are far more memorable in The Wire, though. Omar is one of the great characters in all literature, not just television.

The Sopranos episode 'Pine Barrens' is just incredible. I could watch Paulie all day. With dialogue like this, the Sopranos is TV at it's most awesome.

Tony Soprano: [over the phone] It's a bad connection so I'm gonna talk fast! The guy you're looking for is an ex-commando! He killed sixteen Chechen rebels single-handed!
Paulie 'Walnuts' Gualtieri: Get the **** outta here.
Tony Soprano: Yeah. Nice, huh? He was with the Interior Ministry. Guy's like a Russian green beret. He can not come back and tell this story. You understand?
Paulie 'Walnuts' Gualtieri: I hear you.
[hangs up]
Paulie 'Walnuts' Gualtieri: You're not gonna believe this. He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.
Christopher Moltisanti: His house looked like s***.

I love Sopranos but the stories don't build as well as the Wire. Each season of the wire is like a book. I think the story of the dock workers is my favorite; the one idiot brother with the trans-am:)

The Sopranos I watch an episode sometimes, but I don't feel the need to watch the next episode immediately like I do with the Wire.

Have to mention I found the Shield really addictive too:) Especially the Forrest Whitaker season.

Not to derail the discussion but I'm all into the Shield. My summer, brain off, bubble gum. For me, Wire and Sopranos are just recreational drugs, Vic and the Shield = pure crack.
