My good friend just relocated to Daegu to teach at a hagwon, and before he decided to do this, I had no idea how expansive this world of esl teaching was (just in Korea, no less!). I've started poking around a bit myself, mostly out of curiosity about what he was doing...I'm contemplating trying it out myself as I'm interested in education (have been doing season environmental ed - my background is in biology) and am thinking this might be a cool way to experience something new and get a feel for classroom teaching. But I'm not sure if I'm ready to commit for a year. Are the winter camps a good option to get my feet wet, so to speak? In browsing old posts here, it seems like the camps are mostly discussed in the context of getting screwed by your employers...
So to be more succinct, these are the questions I have (and apologies if these HAVE been answered - there is quite a lot of info on this board to wade through, and linking would also be appreciated)
1. Is applying to a winter camp a good way to get a feel for teaching ESL in Korea?
2. Are all the camps residential? Would I be able to find a winter camp job in Daegu, so I could also hang out with my friend?
3. Do I still go through a recruiter to find a short term position? (And I want the visa - don't want to do this illegally)
4. When/how early should I start looking for winter camp jobs? At the moment it seems like SUMMER jobs are still being filled...
5. Are the camp jobs more competitive than the year long contracts? Should I consider getting one of the cheapo online TEFL certs to boost my chances? Particularly because although I'm born and raised US citizen, my mom is Filipino (I'm worried that my facial feature will put me at a disadvantage). (And in terms of cert - I realize that there are a lot better certs out there, but I'm not willing to commit myself to something more rigorous until I know it might be something I'd actually like to pursue for a while)
6. Finally, in browsing old camp job postings, it seems like there are date ranges from starting mid Dec, to not starting until after Jan 1...is there any generalization about camp dates, or is it job to job?
Thanks in advance for the input! |
