I can't understand why they don't consider the 'tourists' who have been here for 5+ years. |

It's done provincially in Canada, not sure about everywhere else. |

It's done provincially, but it accesses the national database. |

This should be in the no sh-t Sherlock category....but no. All their new rules do nothing to weed out the truly illegal teachers, nor do they do anything about the vast number of employers who don't care at all about education. |

So as a UK citizen and current E2 visa holder in Korea I am probably going to be renewing in March 2011. Am i correct in assuming that come January/February 2011 I am going to have to send my original degree back to the UK to get it apostled and get a new criminal check isssued before renewal date next March?
The criminal check is not that much of an issue it just takes a bit of forethought, but sending my original degree back to the uk is madness!! |

My FBI background check only took 2 1/2 weeks. But I wrote on there that I needed it back by a certain date because my work visa expired then. They were good about it, and got it back to me with a couple of weeks to spare.
I still think it's ass-backwards that they don't make F4's who are teaching do this as well....As long as it's a Korean-American, then it's okay if your teacher has a fake degree and felonies on their record. |

Not true of public schools. Everyone (foreign, Korean, gyopo, or married to a Korean), everyone must supply a check. That is because it is an MoE policy. The MoE should also apply this rule to hagwons and camps, and tell Immigration to stay the hell out of an issue that doesn't concern them. |

| Good thing I'll be on an F visa soon enough. After six years in Korea, I don't even know where my degree is anymore. |

Changes:
As of Sept.,2010:
1. E2 Applicants will be required to submit original degrees to Korea Consulate in their home country for certification. The certification form will be sent to Korea in place of the degree.
2. E2 Visa holders wishing to change workplaces will be required to RE-SUBMIT original degrees for recertification in their home countries.
As of Jan.,2011
1. E2s will require NATIONAL police checks, not local.
2. Even a teacher wishing to EXTEND their current visa, not having left the country will require a NEW police check. |
Let's see. A long time ago, we had to send an original copy of the degree. How is the consulate/embassy back home going to help? They won't certify the degree's quality, only that you have one.
Requiring a national police check could help, but it will increase the amount of time schools must wait for a teacher. It is ridiculous that a new national police check must be provided IF a teacher who has lived in Korea for a year wants to renew a contract. Maybe requiring a Korean police check would be a good idea.
Raise your hand if you think all of this is utterly ridiculous and that people hiring foreign teachers have no clue whatsoever. {sojusucks raises hand} |

Likewise. I'm counting the days. One less inane thing to worry about. |

They do require a local check now. My last visa I was required to go to the local station and get one. |
