For all you lit majors and geeks out there.
Molloy; Malone Dies; The Unnamable
Anyone read these novels? I'm finishing them up now, about halfway through The Unnamable. It's safe to say I'll probably need to revisit them. I feel I've been hacking my way through a jungle of words and left a whole lot of brush that needs to be cleared away before the path is really discernible.
Any insights or keys to understanding? |

There's nothing to understand. But if you can wait a while, I'll give you the key to understanding nothing. |

Wow! I haven't thought of those books in years. It's been well over 10 years since I read that trilogy. I don't remember much in the way of details anymore, but for some reason that stone sucking passage in Molloy has always stuck in my mind.
Here's the passage, in case anyone's interested. http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=UTF-8&fr=crmas&p=html |

I wonder what it is about that passage. I've heard other people mention it too, and it is the first specific thing I think of as well. I was really involved in it. Talking to myself, talking to Molloy, puzzling it out, and by turns frustrated and heartily amused at how long it was taking and how stubbornly methodical it was. |

Hadn't heard of it. Just looked it up on wikipedia. An 80-page paragraph? I pride myself on being able to slog through just about anything I'm determined to, (War and Peace really does pick up after 500 pages or so) but that sounds a bit hard to take. I'd almost rather try and watch Warhol's "Sleep". |

I think I lost a bit of respect for myself when the first thing that came to mind when I read the thread title was Quantum Leap. |

you beat me to the Quantum Leap reference...
but it leads to so many questions.... were you disappointed by the finale to QL?
it really blew the whole purpose of 'odyssey' shows... it was like if the one armed man returned to rub out The Fugitive or Dr. Smith finally got his way with Will Robinson, and Will enjoyed it.... |
