Does anyone know if sending a notarized photocopy of a background is acceptable? I have my background check from the FBI, and it was a pain the arse to get it expedited (usually takes 8-12 weeks). I don't want to send the original and risk it getting lost somehow. And if I get a public school job, they don't return the documents.

There is one problem with the FBI background check: They put a watermark on it, so when you make a photocopy it says "unauthorized copy." The original is authenticated with an official signature and FBI seal, though.

Anyone have feedback on this?

Unfortunately, I can't answer your question, but as a job-seeker myself I'm curious to know why you got an FBI CBC. It was my understanding that state-level checks were acceptable until the end of the year. Were you told differently or is this just an act of caution on your part?

I'm in Arizona which has some "closed-record" law that doesn't allow them to give out background checks. It's the ONLY state that has this rule. Rolling Eyes

So, I was forced to get the FBI check. I could've tried using another state, but didn't want to risk it.

For the actual visa application (the one that goes to immigration) you need to send the original with the apositlle.

You ONLY send it (along with your other hard copies) when you have confirmed that you have accepted the position and they begin the visa confirmation number application.

You will NOT get it back from immigration and if you change your mind after that point you will need to get another one.

Thanks ttompatz, I figured that was the case. Really wish I had asked for an extra copy, oh well.
