Hello. I am trying to gather documents and start applying for jobs in Korea. I have obtained a criminal background check however I am a little skeptical on if it is acceptable. I went to my local police station and they told me to go online here, http://apps.michigan.gov/ichat/home.aspx , and pay $10 and print it out. Upon searching a page comes up that tells me I have no criminal record found in Michigan.
I printed out several copies, had them notarized and apostilled, however I am still doubting this. I contacted the Chicago consulate and they told me they have nothing to do with the background check and that it is sent to Korea. Can anyone tell me if this is sufficient or correct? If not, what do I need to do?

Here's a picture of what turns up and what is printed out.

I don't think it will be accepted, but if you already went through the trouble of getting it notarized and have the time, try it. I am curious too. I thought we needed to send some fingerprint file to the station and then they will send something back.

Sorry, an online criminal background check is not valid.

The U.S. Embassy states "Korean Immigration informed the Embassy on July 17, 2008, that they will no longer accept criminal records checks provided by an on-line service."

See: http://www.asktheconsul.org/E2ec07.htm

You need a (1) state background check that has an (2) apostille.

See this link for instructions:

http://www.asknow.ca/criminalcheck.aspx#cbc

Note: Starting Jan 1, 2011, only FBI criminal background checks with an apostille will be accepted.

Thank you for the info, however... Ah drats! is the worst I can say. >_<

After doing more research into my state specifically I believe this is what I need to do, correct?

I'll need to be fingerprinted and wait 3-5 weeks? Sad

I'm trying to get to Korea ASAP. I started applying to recruiters two days ago. Is that okay? Is the criminal background check needed to obtain the E2 visa? Or is the CRC needed to accept a job? Hopefully it's to obtain the E2 visa here in the US because otherwise I'll be waiting a long time... :-\

That seems to be correct, but I'd suggest calling them to see if the procedures for Michigan residents has been updated.

What if my job starts in Feb. but I have a State CBC from October? Is this Jan 1st date for jobs starting after Jan 1st?? Or is it for background checks submitted after that time?

If you are already in the system, then I doubt you will need to get a new CBC. It's Korea, so this could always change. However, when I came in 2007, they didn't need a CBC. All I had to do after 2007 was extend my visa and change location to the new school. This was good enough.

I am assuming the 2011 notice is for new people coming for the first time to Korea. Let's hope this is the case.

You will still need an FBI background check because you won't be obtaining your E-2 visa until after Jan 2011. The new change applies to everyone (new hires, extending, transferring). After 2011, you will need an FBI background check.

Here's Immigration's text on the change:

"Those who came in before 2010.7.15 and still in Korea and also those who did not hand in sufficient document should hand in the nationwide version criminal background check when you make a sojourn related application after 2011.1.1."

Note: the 15 July 2010 date was when the new rule was enacted but 1 Jan 2011 is when it will be implemented.

It's not acceptable - I tried to do the same thing. HOWEVER, 2 of my friends from Michigan were able to use their $10 online one...sooooo that's Korea. The answer is typically ' maybe'
