How strict are the piracy laws out there?

Is there any way I would get busted for downloading American TV shows while I am living in Korea? I pretty much only use megaupload type sites, and newsgroups. I will occasionally use torrents if I get desperate.

Pretty much everyone I know here uses torrents. Koreans and NETs alike. My coteacher asked my students to bring in a movie ripped from the internet one time.

You will be fine.

Non-issue in most (all?) of Asia.

Korea is an ideal place for it. 100mbs network connections (gigabit in some places) and no throttles means that with a decent private tracker and a well seeded file you can download movies/TV shows faster than you can watch them.

I know many folks with several terabyle HDDs loaded with stuff.

My best was The Wire: Season One in under 35 minutes.

A bit off topic, but they were very strict about it at a Japanese university where I studied. There had been registered traffic on a port which is often used for peer-to-peer traffic in our lab, and therefore they shut down the internet for our whole lab for one week.

In Korea on the other hand... my professors show us pirated movies in class.

Are there any Korean or Asian based sites that are in English or easy to use to download torrents from?

I get decent speeds from sites I use like isohunt, btjunkie and thepiratebay, but I know it should and could be a lot faster.

That would be a university issue (against their TOS?) usually because of bandwidth issues. IF they had 30-50 terminals on the network being used as seed boxes for P2P the network would crawl to a standstill.
