I'm an American and I don't like anyone touching me for any reason other than a girlfriend or an immediate family member.
Don't violate my personal bubble please and do not touch me for the love of all that's holy. |
If I remember right, your from the Pacific Northwest? In the U.S. its regional. On the East Coast, especially the Southeast, amd maybe most especially Miami, people are very touchy-feely- kissing when meeting, etc.
I have lived equally in Seattle and Miami. I probably experience as much culture shock when I go to Seattle as when I come here. I go to greet not close Seattle friends with the double besos of Miami, and they shrink away as if I am suggesting intercourse.
I love to hug my camp kids, but it certainly isn't for everyone! |

I think you may be right.
My s.o. not long ago read a book written by a Korean attorney who had gone to live in the U.S. for awhile and then come back to live in Korea. In the book, one of the reasons he gave for deciding to move back to Korea was that he loathed the "American custom" of women greeting men (including those to whom they are first being introduced) by kissing them on the cheeks and hugging them.
I got asked about this and answered truthfully that for the life of me I didn't recall this being a custom at all (I'm from California). Is that common in other parts of the U.S.? |

| I really think the kissing and hugging is an east coast, probably urban, thing. I also suspect that it comes from the Latin and European influences on the east coast. Its certainly the case in Miami. If you go to rural parts of Florida, it is more hands off. |
