Police and fire officials speculate that one of the seven gas tanks in the bus exploded due to the heat wave.
A female passenger, 27, who was sitting right above the gas tank that exploded, lost both her feet. Twelve bus passengers and five pedestrians were among those injured. Cars that were driving near the bus at the time of the explosion were also damaged.
�I heard an explosive blast and saw smoke shooting from the bus,� said a witness, surnamed Son. �I saw a woman with a serious injury to her ankle and the driver, who was covered in debris and walked out of the bus.�
Other witnesses added that windows of nearby buildings also shattered due to the shock from the explosion. Fifteen fire trucks and more than 70 policemen hurried to the scene and rushed the injured to Hanyang University Medical Center, Soonchunhyang University Hospital and Seoul Micro Hospital.
According to the police, the number 241B route bus was on its way to Muhak Middle School, waiting for the light to change in front of exit 4 of Haengdang station, when it exploded. The bus was towed away around 6:35 p.m. and the police are investigating the exact cause of the explosion.
Compressed natural gas buses began entering service in Seoul in 2000 as part of an environmental push, with 7,300 out of 7,558 Seoul buses now running on CNG. It was fifth time that a CNG bus had suffered an explosion. |

You know, there was a thread sometime last year about the Korea Herald and how it was a rag. I posted on there asking why no one ever reads the Joong Ang Ilbo, why everyone reads the Herald or the Times, and then complains about it...
JoongAng, quality paper. For the most part, doesn't comes across as pro or anti anything, just delivers the news. |

Really? Well the Korean language edition is considered conservative along with the Chosun Ilbo and Dong-A Ilbo.
The Hankyoreh is on the other side. I think it was started by a bunch of dissident journalists in the 80's.
I also like checking out ohmynews. |

Well, maybe it's that the liberal news here is so liberal that the conservative comes across as balanced to me. Fair and balanced, if you will.  |

Yeah, I always thought the rule was that Korean liberal = anti-foreigner because to be an ultra-leftist in Korea = pro North Korea.
Of course, I could be talking out my rear again, which is why I should stop trying to type this backwards. |

Holy crap! I was behind a bus today that had tons of white smoke pouring out from the back.
I had just made a U-Turn to make it to the Nissan Dealership. I'm not sure if this is the same bus that exploded but there was so much smoke that it was hard to tell where to turn into the dealer. |

Lucky that blue truck wasn't carrying propane tanks, otherwise this would be bigger news.
I always thought those buses were LPG, not the compressed gas. Guess I was wrong. Also, going to make sure I'm sitting at the back, not the mid-section. |

Same thing I have been saying and doing all day. A shame about that girl and her feet. Did they mention the extent of injuries other people had? |

Well, that seems to be the perception on Dave's, at least among the battle-hardened survivors of 2002. Though I've always said that any perceived pro-foreigner sentiment on the Korean Right is more precisely pro-USFK-cuz-if-those-guys-leave-that means we-pay-for-our-own-defense-and-no-more-military-exemptions-for-our-kids sentiment.
And according to The Hankyoreh, it's actually the Democratic Party, heirs to DJ and Roh Moo Hyun, as well as the left-leaning Public Interest Lawyers Group, who are pushing for laws protecting foreigners from racist speech. |

I shudder every time I see a bongo truck carrying those propane tanks in the bank. They are rarely tied down or secured well, and they're all clanking together while the truck is bumping on down the road.

| It's not the trucks that worry me. It's the dudes on the motorcycles with the propane tank barely strapped on. Yeah, like that thing's not going to turn into a missile when he crashes. |
