This one drives me absolutely nuts. It happens so often I predict it's only a matter of time before definately is an "acceptable" spelling. Cripes, I saw a writer for IGN-which is not some small, unknown website-use it!

Just looks like my ability to use the keyboard isn't that of a highly trained professional, and the exaggerated use of said tool becomes all that more tiresome having to press the shift every time I 'need' to, since it isn't necessarily second nature to me, as it would be when writing a letter on paper.

You need to be a "highly trained professional" to use the shift key?!? Good lord. How did you ever graduate from college?

Some people don't use a keyboard as much as others. Others have a broken pinky. Some people have a broken shift key. Some people genuinely just find it not worth the effort when talking informally.

Only pedants come along and think 'hmm, you missed a capital T there... your IQ MUST be below 89, and you MUST have finished school when you were 16 or younger'.

In fact I'm a pedant, and I don't even do it. So antagonists would be a better word.

Not that I'm having a go at you about the post, Just explaining. Sometimes I am lazy, and I very often don't bother capitalising country names.
Sometimes unfamiliar words feel unnatural on the keyboard to me, and it takes a split second of thought to put a capital on it, so I won't bother.

And so on. I think it's a little unnecessary to call people dumb for it. How about less experienced on a computer than the average modern human?

In fact looking, on my instant messenger I have used a SINGLE capital letter, apostrophe, full stop, hyphen and so forth.
Yet I don't think about adding them when I speak on here.

Does that make me dumb in some scenarios, but not others?

I come from the world of MOOs where improper grammar and punctuation got you railed on, and could actually result in miscommunication because of the nature of it. Too bad they've all pretty much died out except for a token population on LambaMOO.

This one bugs me, but mostly because the spelling is irregular. My spelling is pretty bad to begin with, and when I see the red squiggle, I try to figure out where my error was rather than click on the list to see the correct spelling. Ultimately, I have to remind myself that a random i appears in the word for no apparent reason.

As far as definately becoming an acceptable spelling, I don't see why this is a bad thing. Languages change over time based on errors, uniformity and various other factors. If this weren't the case, there would be one language, and we'd all be out of a job.

It's called register. When typing a message that will be seen by maybe hundreds of people it's common courtesy to follow very basic grammar rules.

Don't use a keyboard? How did they get through college? I was in schol when 286s were the new thing. I still had to type all my papers.

I have a busted index finger. Haven't been able to bend it in 10 years.

Broken shift key? Buy a new keyboard. They're cheap.

Not worth the effort? Why should we take the effort to read your post then?

I never complained about a missed "capital T". I'm talking about people who don't use any capitals at all. As in "i'm moving to korea next month. what should i bring with me?". That's the sign of an idiot.

Seriously, you want to teach English and you can't capitalize?

I was never told of this common courtesy... When I come on Dave's I see someone posting, then people replying with outright disrespectful and rude remarks of accusation and assumption. Why should I be courteous enough to make my writing look a bit prettier?

Maybe... the content is interesting!

Maybe they have a laptop. keyboard replacement not so simple then, eh?

Who on earth uses their index to press the shift key?

I'm not sure why you would complain about all missing capitals, and be fine with just one or two. It's the same fault, the same principle.

Well, I can understand as a simple pet peeve, like definately, but then I don't recall anybody posting a thread on how people who write definately are morons with no education and are incapable of teaching their native language.

Umm, no. One is a typo. The other is a blatant disregard for common rules of English.

Oh yes I hate that. It's why I've filtered out my online community of friends from about 400 to 30 - which is essentially all my in-life friends, also online.

One may be a typo, but a type implies an attempt to press the shift, and missing it. Whereas I will happily not capitalise words, such as countries on here (occasionally thinking about it and going back to correct, but not always or often), but capitalise most everything else.

Anywho, I heard on a BBC show a while ago that the English language was predicted to go under a whole reform in which typin lyk dis wud bcome more valid in society.
It's ridiculous but will probably happen knowing my luck.

Just another note on the topic before I disappear from it - I remember when I was somewhere around the age of 15-17 I was a typer of doom like the cool kids do.

My best friend then complained about it and said it made him not want to talk to me. Within a month or so I was typing pretty much ideally (more lax now than back then) to suit his needs, and before long I was correcting his mistakes as a Nazi.

I don't think the lack of capitals should be directly proportioned to ones intelligence, basically. I mean, I'm a complete retard and I type just fine.
