User names are frequently all lower case. Back in the Unix days that was the only thing you could have.

Anyways, here's a good discussion of the issue of capitalization:

I capitalize automatically on this forum and whenever I send emails.
I usually don't bother when I am sending a text message or having an informal chat with someone online.

I guess the difference is that this is more formal, for lack of a better term. It annoys the living hell out of me when I see posts that look like text messages or I see posts with no capitalization or run-on sentences. It also annoys me when I get emails from people using text message language, such as "4" instead of "for." Really, it would take you so much more time to type 2 more letters?

They don't already?

I'm on the OP's side. I'm of the opinion that if I'm going through the trouble of publishing my thoughts then I want to demonstrate a certain level of decency and self-respect. Proper keyboard use, for most of us, is not a difficult task. Nonetheless, there will always be the lazy ones among us who haven't any dignity. In fact, I'll bet some of you don't brush your teeth twice a day or bother to wash when appropriate.

I've noticed a lot of posters here don't use the shift key. What's with that? Is that how low standards have sunk here? Or is that how young people type these days?

Expect to be called out if you write like an illiterate idiot.

1. i've noticed a lot of conceited losers wandering around eslcafe.com with a massive chip on their shoulder of late. ok, not really of late - always. since the year dot. you must be their leader. nice to meet you.*

2. what's it really matter? am i grading an essay here? do you understand the content of my missives? do you have sand in your vagina?**

3. what standards? what are you talking about???

4. young people? let me guess: you're american, overweight, male, single, over forty years of age, been in korea for two or more years because you have no prospects in your own country. am i right?***

i wrote out a whole bunch of abusive stuff, but then i deleted it. it was too easy. i will say this, however: you're the worst kind of moron. you don't even realise what you're complaining about.

lowercase and uppercase use has little to do with grammar, genius, if the whole text is in lowercase.

but i expect someone who is quite clearly the pinnacle of human achievement would already understand that.

go drink bleach.

* sarcasm. i can't stand you, and yet i know very little about you. weird.

** don't answer that. i think everyone already knows the answer.

*** please don't correct me. i really don't care.

well, that was fun. have a great day, everyone!

i want to read this as sarcasm, but it's either way too subtle for me, or it isn't there.

help a brother out.

Nice, you're right. I DON'T wash when appropriate and I only SOMETIMES brush my teeth twice a day.

I therefore conclude I have no dignity.

And, I see you're British. Perhaps that's par for the course on the island. (By the way, I am writing this in a light-hearted tone. You slovenliness is probably more Earth-friendly than my daily shower habit.)

i bet most of you are over-weight, even though there is absolutely no reason why you should be.

there's a pretty good measure of dignity.

So says the person who doesn't know how to capitalize. I think you've proven my point quite well.

how does that prove anything? why would you assume i don't know how to capitalise?

i now find it a bit of a worry that you have so little faith in your ability to read and understand english that you require capitalised letters at all appropriate times in every single sentence.

this is a casual forum where typing quickly is-

oh, you know what. i'm done.

this has been . . . mildly entertaining. i'm now going to go do something more productive. like stare at the freakin' wall. or chew my fingers off.

You don't know how to, you're too lazy to (ooh, shift-i is so hard!), or you're just a moron. I'm not sure the exact cause is all that important. Further proof that standards here are low, low, low.
