|
|
So, we are wondering if anyone knows if we can get out of our current contract and move to a different school. We have been here for about 6 months. We have had quite a few things happen to us since we have been here. Locked out of our apartment, (Not paying rent) Lied to us about having insurance, and currently are not paying it. The school refuses to pay into the national pension. The latest thing is he has been taking our tax off of our paycheck, and pocketing it every month. We are not sure if we should just accept that we got a crap school (we have gotten get paid so far except for the stolen tax money) or try to get our of our contract. Our biggest worry is that we will not get our severance and and flight money at the completion of our contract. The hogwan still owes the last group of foreign teachers there severance, flight and last paycheck. It doesn't seam he is very interested in paying any of it. Just seeing what peoples thoughts on the situation are. |

call the labor board! This is entirely illegal! They will be required to pay you AND get a hefty fee. |

Since not paying the rent will save the school nothing, it is obvious that your school is having financial trouble. Costs too high and not enough students. You are unlikely to ever collect the unpaid items and your year end payments. Withholding taxes only have to be paid to the government once or twice per year for small businesses, so you can't be sure that they will keep the whole amount - although chances are they will if not caught. The school is likely close to bankrupt.
You should look for a new job now. You will probably want to keep working until you get your new documents in order to get a new visa and find an acceptable new position. Once you're ready, collect as much as you can on your next payday and fly out to Japan the next day, turn in your ARC and cancel your visa. Then come back and process your documents for the new job. You can then report your previous employer for the unpaid Health Ins and Pension. Of course, if they're bankrupt, you may never collect. But you should try.
If you quit, you could be the final straw that dumps your boss into bankruptcy, if many students quit with you gone.
OTOH, if the students keep going, then you could actually rescue your boss from failure by forcing him to run his school without you and thereby lowering his costs. |

Get out of there!
There are too many shady hagwons in Korea. I went through the same thing. I had a bunch of meetings with the people of the school to make sure they understood where I was coming from. The meetings weren't always friendly, although I tried to keep it friendly. I just brought up what they were doing and they got really offended. Even if they do, hold your ground. |

When you say head to japan then come back and then get the documents processed, does that mean I would have to go back to the states? Or just get them done while in Japan? |

Only if you have nine months of teaching experience in Korea, or something along those lines. |
