Root canals in Korea should not cost anything more than like 300,000 won. I know a dentist in Insadong and hers cost about that. Crowns are a bit more expensive. I think a porcelain crown is about 600,000.

for that money, become a medical tourist.
Root canal + crown is regularly priced about 2800 baht in Thailand (just under $100) and similarly priced in Cebu (unless you go to the dentist in the mall).
300k for the root canal and 600k for a crown (1 million total) will more than pay for a weekend or 2 in SE Asia AND getting the work done too.
Caveat: won't work at peak vacation times but certainly do-able on a long weekend if you book your flight a bit in advance. It's not like the necessity of a root canal is a surprise (you know it is coming).

Anyone know how much whitening costs here? The in-office bleaching/light method. Would it be cheaper to do in the US? |

I got it for 500k (included 2 in-office sessions plus an at-home whitening tray with ~1 month supply of whitening gel) with pretty good results. |

I went to Tufts several months ago. I found the experience very uncomfortable and disappointing. Against my better judgement, I let her reshape my front teeth (she told me they looked like bunny rabbit teeth). She took off almost all of the enamel and now my teeth are cracked. One was root canaled as a result and I don't know what will happen to it now. She did refund the money for the procedure and offered to have a look at my teeth, but due to my previous experience in her office, I refused. I personally don't want a dentist who is more concerned with aesthetics than function. My teeth were much healhtier before. |
I am Dr. Gina Sohn, the owner dentist of Tufts Dental.
I want to explain what happened to a patient who received Teeth Reshaping in our clinic.
Jan 29, 2010 : She came in to get her two centrals reshaped. We discussed and she agreed. She seemed happy with the result.
Jan 30, 2010 : She came back in the morning and wanted to get a canine reshaped. I did reshaped the canine and she happily went back home.
Mar, 2010 : She complained about an internal crack( she saying that I created this during reshaping. Maybe or maybe not). I explained to her that most internal cracks do not cause problems but if it does in the future, I would do my best to address it. I sincerely apologized and asked if she could delete the negative review.
She kept posting bad reviews on our clinic on many threads on this website.
July,2010 : She asked if I could refund the fee she paid for teeth reshaping. It was 200 K won. I refunded.
She posted another couple of bad reviews even after she got refunded. From what she wrote, I am not only a bad dentist who chases after money only but also a really bad person.
I asked if she could come in to our clinic so I exam the teeth and see what I can do. She refused.
I informed her that I would take a legal route unless she deleted untrue stories about me as a dentist.
She said sorry and promised to either delete or revise.
Jul 23,2010 : She revised that i gave her a procedure, it caused bigger problems, I refunded the money and offered to fix it and she declined.
I said thank you.
Jul 25,2010 : She came back with these grudge-based opinions again.
I understand she is upset. However, with all this history, I am not sure what her intention is.
No dentist in the world is always perfect and similar things could have happened to any dentist she would have chosen.
1.It was her that finally wanted to get the procedure done. She came back for another reshaping the next morning.
2. Only sperficail layers of her enamel were removed, which would not normally do any harm to her teeth.
3.I am not sure if the reshaping caused crack lines or it's been there even before the procedure.
4. I was willing to help her with the teeth involved at all costs.
5.I am more concerend with function and health of teeth than aesthetics.
6.I want her to move on as she promised to .

Very satisfied Tufts patient here so far - great dentist & staff, excellent English all round, top notch tech and facilities. One of the reasons I chose Tufts while investigating the options was actually Gina's response above, really respect her for putting her side of the story on here. And as Samantha said, no upselling or pushiness on the cosmetic side, just straightforward advice and choices.
Given I'd avoided the dentist for.. lets say a few years.. was pretty apprehensive about some of the stuff I needed done but had 2 extractions, a filling and a root canal so far - minimal discomfort during the procedures and no pain to speak of afterwards. Can't say I'm looking forward to the rest of the work! - but I'll certainly be staying with Tufts. |

I recommend Dr. Yu at WY Dentistry in Gangnam.
http://www.wydent.com/
02 514 5575
He's a little pricey but he's practically certified in everything and has a pretty well known client list.
He speaks perfect English and his staff speaks English as well.
He also was the only dentist that was able to figure out how to correct my bite without surgery (just plain old braces).
The braces he chose for my teeth are virtually invisible and no one notices until I point them out. They're a lot smaller than the clear braces I've seen other adults wearing so maybe thats why I'm paying a little more.
I'm really happy with the progress I've made so far and I highly recommend him! |

Why don't you take your own advice and also move on? Also, why do your reviews sound more like ads? Ever person who comments about your practice in here sounds more like an advertisement than a review. Everyone leaves happy. Okay. Why are you singling out someone who has given you a less than favourable review? People in this forum are entitled to their opinions. If this was the United States and a procedure that you performed caused someone unnecessary harm you would be trapped in a civil case on account of negligence. You should be thankful this person has no legal recourse. If I were you, I'd take your own advice and let it go. If what you are saying has any validity then you should be able to sue, however, that is very unlikely...but then again laws in Korea can be pretty ridiculous and generally favour the Korean no matter what they do.
Can anyone recommend a dentist who HASN'T commented in this forum? It's kind of creepy. |

I was pretty satisfied with Hu's hu (clean and modern facility, accommodating staff and dentist) but the bill was significantly more expensive than the initial quote. Patient beware. |

I recently went to SIC dental clinic in the Co-ex mall to get my wisdom teeth pulled. The dentist himself speaks pretty good English and his staff uses small sheets of paper with English directions to communicate.... which was surprisingly efficient.
The office is clean and they were really gentel (I've been to plenty of dentists who think your mouth is a rubberband). I checked out the prices as a few other places in Seoul and they had about same if not cheaper prices. It's on the right side as soon as you enter the co-ex mall via exit 6 so its not hard to find. The staff seemed to know what they were doing and I was in and out pretty fast. I recommend this place to any foreigner who is apprehensive about finding the right dentist.

My girlfriend and I had good experiences last year with MEI Dental in Gwangjin-gu. Not the cheapest, but they showed us pictures of problem spots and seemed honest about what did and didn't need to be done. We paid 50,000 for the standard cleaning and checkup.

I recently went to A42 dentist in Acro Tower so thought I would give an update.
Booked in for check up and a clean, it's been about a year since my check up at home and about 18 months since a professional clean so I wanted one.
I got my check up and all the xrays etc and she found four holes (I couldn't see any on the xray but I am not a dentist or radiographer) one that wanted two treatments and was between two teeth and would cost 350,000. The other three would be 150,000 each. Also she wanted to take my remaining wisdom teeth out. No need to, they're fully through, not impacted or anything. I had my last to come through out in November at a Korean speaking only dentist my boss took me to, it was impacted and causing a lot of trouble it only cost me 30,000 won. He also did a check up and never mentioned the holes as Acro Tower did.
I'm also sceptical because one of the cavities she mentioned is, according to my home dentist, a natural groove in my tooth which does not go through and cause a hole - I have asked my dentist about this numerous times so was concerned when this dentist here said I needed it filling.
I trust my home dentist more though so think I will try another dentist for a second opinion, I don't expect my teeth to be perfect but I don't expect them to have gained that many issues in one year.
As for the clean - they said they couldn't fit that in until July - but they can extract all my wisdom teeth next week!
So that's my review on Acro Tower but I only had a check up, no actual work. English level was good.
I was wondering is 150,000 won for a filling considered cheap because I thought dental treatment was supposed to be cheaper in Korea but that is about the same price I paid at home for a private dentist, (UK) so I am a bit confused about that.
Does anyone know what the average cost of a white/tooth coloured filling is here? and what is the obsession with wisdom tooth extraction? (my friend was also recommended to have all four removed although no problems with them) |
