Hello awesome English teachers,
After dragging my feet for months, I finally applied to teach English in Korea. I did some research and decided to go through an agency. While not my first pick, I applied to ESL Park, to see what the process was like and lo and behold I got an e-mail from them this morning saying:
"Congratulations!
This letter is to inform you that your application for the English teaching position has been accepted."
Apparently my Career consultant Rena Kim is calling me later today!!!! I'm still shell shocked by the fact that my application was accepted and even though the pay does not look amazing (1,800/mo) I am still excited.
But it seems to good to be true. Two days after I applied I am excepted and have tons of paperwork I need to fill out before a surprise interview. On top of that, I have heard so-so things about ESL PArk. Should I hold out? Obviously I will fill out the paperwork and send it in and give my interview, which I am decently unprepared for. But should I simply take the first offer given to me? Am I really in that high of a demand for these jobs? Am I getting way to ahead of myself in my excitement?
Also some note about me, I am a recent college graduate with some minor grade school teaching experience.
And thank you all for the help, you have been very nice to me in the past,
-smiling and excited

Where is this and what are the hours? That's really, really terrible pay unless there are some serious perks involved. You'll still do fine making that much, but the standard starting rate is 2.2. If you're willing to work for 1.8 you'll get tons of offers. |

@Northway, his 1,800, could be $, in which cause it's more like 2.0m.
@Aaron, before you get all excited about the job, find out a little bit and have a look at the contract. There may very well be a "good" reason why that school is desperate for teachers - Bad reputation, terrible contract, poor location, to name a few. But at the end of the day, judge it on it's merits, provided you meet the minimum requirements, there are plenty of jobs in Korea, and even a few very nice ones |

Supposedly it is in dollars and straight out of college, I'm willing to work for Kimchi and a roof over my head.
I don't know where it is yet, which makes me nervous. The hours stated are 1:00 to 9:00, with 45 minute classes with 12 students in each class. This sounds good to me, but I'm about to do some in depth contract reading!!

Be sure to post the contract in the review thread in the Jobs forum so we can look it over.
Good luck |

Take a deep breath, OP. It sounds your application was accepted by the recruiter. It's normal for a recruiter, aka "career consultant," to interview you before they start offering positions.
The contract you posted looks like a sample contract. It evens says "FIRST YEAR CONTRACT DRAFT" at the top, no start dating date, etc..

I could be totally wrong, though.

Thank you all for the replies.
@ SunDevil Dre, I think you are right, it looks like the recruiter is interviewing me and I don't have a school at the moment.
It looks like I will do the interview, but will not expect to take a job if they offer and will keep applying to more recruiters with fingers crossed.

That's great that you got a bite on your resume, but I say keep looking.
1.8 is NOT good.
I came here starting at 1.9 in 2003 and I was living in the country.
You deserve and can get more.
1.8 after taxes, bills, etc. is about 1.6 which when converted to US$ is NOT good.
So, congrats on getting your foot in the door, but you can definitely do better. |

The teacher agrees to teach upon 30 teaching hours a week. The said workload is equal to 45 teaching periods per month (One teaching period is equal to 40-minutes) |
I found this part of your contract to be very confusing. 45 teaching periods a month or 45 teaching periods a week? More likely 45 teaching periods a week is my guess.
45/5=9 classes a day..
Give it a pass.. you'd be burnt out inside of two months. |
