Yes, it will access the internet in Korea.

Wifi is just the way a device connects to the internet. It is the same as iPod Touch, smart phones, laptops etc. If you have Wifi in you home you can even use it at home.

The 3G Kindle works over the same network as cell phones, so it will have problems in Korea (although, I believe the 3G Kindle is enabled for Korea).

I'm thinking about getting one, too. Some folks say customs charges might be a problem. Tell us how you get on, if you do order it. It is priced right, at least.

I just bought one in the States and it works fine here.

I would suggest that you get the cover for it...makes it easier to take with you.

Yeah, not sure about the customs fee.

Have you checked Amazon.jp? Not sure if they have them there.

The Kindle DX (9' screen) doesn't have wifi. The smaller ones do, including the new one.

Thanks guys - I just ordered one from the US; I'm having it sent directly to Korea.

Amazon did say something like, 'you may be liable for customs charges,' but no charge appeared on checkout. I'll just have to wait and see.

Thanks Ajuma - I took your advice and got a cover - apart from anything I think it will make it feel more like a regular book when reading it. I didn't check out the japanese site as I wouldn't be able to read it - ordered from the states instead of the UK though as it works out cheaper - we always get stiffed in the UK.

Will post re. customs charges when I find out anything

Can't wait to hear your travails. I've been reading off of [Dodging Swear filter] screens for years. PSP, iPod Touch, iPod Classic, Smart Phone (HTC Desire), it will be thrilling to eventually read off something with pretensions to being an actual reader.

You know you can download books now...even before your Kindle gets here. There are a whole bunch of free ones. Go to Kindle, then Kindle books, then scroll down and watch the left column for "All Books". When THAT screen comes up, in the right-hand corner there will be a "sort by" and choose "price low to high".

I've found so many good (but mainly unheard of) books that I got for free. I figure a few more and the Kindle will have paid for itself!

I'm thinking of ordering one direct from Amazon for here. I'd really appreciate it if you'd post the "damages" from customs. Laughing

Just a suggestion: The international Kindle comes with a USB plug for charging the battery. The US version comes with a 2-prong American plug which attaches to the USB plug.

Since I bought my Kindle in the US and have a power converter, I used that to charge my Kindle battery. Just to see what would happen, I tried it with the USB port plugged into my computer and it DIDN'T WORK!!

The Kindle site DOES say something about the USB port not charging the battery, but I don't remember exactly what it was.

If I were you, I'd a) send the Kindle to a friend or family member and have them send it to you so you can get the power plug and b) be sure to set your location setting to the US (or UK), since there is (from what I understand) a big difference in the number and types of books you can download from each country's site.

All of that said, I really love my Kindle. Oh! And get a cover with a reading light (check out the "warehouse sale" page)! Worth the extra money!

My kindle internet has worked fine in Canada, Korea and Taiwan.

I haven't had any problems charging it off of my computer though, but I have one that is one generation old. ( i bought it just before the new one came out)

Customs charges for the Kindle wifi will be 33,600 won. I forgot what it was for the 3G but it was around 40-45,000 won.

I got the wifi version and it's been great.

Got the Kindle wifi & 3G sent out here. Got held up at customs for a day, in the end it cost 44,000. Worth it though IMO.
