Has anyone lived there before? If so, how did you find it? I found a couple of brief mentions of it whilst searching this site, but not too much info about the city itself. I also came across a blog by an irish guy. In the blog he seemed really keen on the place.. but as far as I can tell he just stopped updating it one day. Maybe he got busted for teaching privates and kicked out the country or something.

So anyone got any other information about the city? I understand theres a lot of beaches and islands in the region. Apart from that.. are there any half-ok bars? Where would the nearest carrefour/homeplus/emart/walmart/department store be? Do they have girls (post-high school, pre-marriage) there?

If you know anything about the place, let me know.

thanks.

I drove through the town briefly.. it looked even worse than Seosan - my least favorite Korean town I've ever spent the night in.

The plus of Taean would be the beaches that aren't that far away. Of course, that plus would only be in the summertime for a couple months.

Niceuh!

Any other opinions? As I said, I was reading some Irish dude's blog about living there but I can't find it now. He seemed to like it. Hmm.

Mr. Bradley, I'm hoping now that its nicer to live there than it is to visit. I've heard people say that about Korea in general.. that its better to live in than to visit, so maybe it applies on a different scale once you're IN Korea.. these cities which are crap to visit are actually great to live in. Hmm.

Any more opinions would be most welcome =)

Here's my theory: If on one has heard of it, don't go there.

That was me!!! I was there last year for about 8 months teaching. It's not a city, believe me!! It only has about 30,000 people and only about 4/5 foreign teachers there. It was very very boring, not even a cinema there. Only 2 good drinking spots. No department store only Korean marts. They level of English is poor to none!! I stopped updating the website 'cas I got bored of it and I wasn' enjoying it anymore. Sad My co-teacher from UK was a pain in the ass and having shared housing really ticked me off. The beaches are nice I must admit but very busy in the summer. Believe me it's not a city!!

Just drove through today didn't look like much, though the beaches close by are okay as far as Korean beaches are. We went to Manipo Beach which wasn't too crowded had the usual overdose of garish restaurants and at the far end it sounded like some mad kareoke was going off which was kind of annoying.

Had a good day though. It took a little over 2.5 hours to get back to kangnam even though it was only about 170k away.

This discussion is 5 years old but I figured I would ask, Has anything changed in Taean in the last 5 years? I will be heading to the area in a few weeks.

I was there about a year ago. Beautiful coastline and beaches, very peaceful. Quiet/boring to the point where it might be painful for some. Cost of goods is nice and cheap. Didn't see a single other expat, but they must have a small community of Native English speakers who all know each other; every small Korean town does.

Still no decent train line, the only way in or out is by express bus.

Sounds like a good place for late fall bike riding and beach camping. Especially if you have a band that plays acoustic instruments. Hmmmmmmmmm......
