| I'm planning to stay with a friend in Phnom Penh in around 6 weeks. What would be the cheapest way to get there from Korea? I don't mind bussing it for a day from somewhere else nearby if need be. |

well korean air and asiana fly nonstop to phnom penh but are rather expensive.
best option is to fly to bangkok via a korean discount carrier (jeju or jin air) and grabbing an air asia flight to pp, you may have to overnight it in bkk though
there are overland options (bus to border, taxi to siem reap or pp) but those are long and grinding routes |

| The cheapest option is to take a bus from the Bangkok airport directly to Cambodia. Buses leave twice daily from the airport terminal itself. It costs under $20. |

| I second the Air Asia suggestion. Well worth the money. Overland should be an absolute last resort, it is (in my opinion) the worst land border crossing in the world. |

The bus from BKK takes over 12 hours and is horrendous, even with the road upgrades over the past few years. I've done it about a half a dozen times and hated it. Plus, you have to put up with getting shaken down by Kampuchea's corrupt boarder guards.
If you're going to go overland, it's nicer to spend a couple nights in Pattaya or one of the islands over that way and then go through Koh Kong in the morning. Same border guards. Even worse drivers on the Cambodian side. But at least nowadays the driver doesn't have to stop at 6 ferries to get you to the capital.
I was looking at flights the other day on cheaopair.com. I don't know if they're good or what, but they had return flights through China, with a 5 hour stopover, for around $360. That's less than half of Korean Air, and a lot better than any bus option. |

gthanks for all the good replies!
my situation is that I gotta be in CHina in early October to start a new job. I'll have airfares paid to/from China. I finish up work in Korea mid September.
Have people I can stay with in Japan and also Phnom Penh, as mentioned above. Would be nice to see the beach, but at the same time would be nice to be in Japan. Biggest expense in Japan is transportation, so I'd have to bus it between cities.
Just need to kill time as cheaply as possible coz money is an issue right now!
One friend suggested I take the ferry across to Fukuoka (never done that). ALso gonna be carrying a heavy case.

i haven't done this half a dozen times, but i did do it once this past december. we took the bus from bangkok to aranyaprathet, crossed the border on foot, and sprung for a taxi from the border to siem reap. the bus left bangkok around 11 or 12 and we were settled into our guesthouse and checking out the town by 7 or 8 PM.
to get back to bangkok, i paid something around $100 USD to fly from phnom penh so we'd get an extra day on the beach in sihanoukville.
if i had the whole thing to do over again, i would have done it all the exact same way. crossing that border by land the first time was stressful and time consuming, but it was one of the more memorable parts of that particular trip. |
