Can you buy portable air-con units in Korea ? I don't even know if such a thing exists. You can buy small light heaters so why can't you buy small light aircon units. I would like to get something that I can move from room to room in the hot months.
Any info where to buy and how much would be great. I don't know how I will get it to my appartment though.
Thanks |

It is much easier to heat something then to cool it.
A portable air conditioner would still require a compessor/heat exchanger which must be outside the area being cooled.
In reality a air conditoner generates more heat then it removes.
So to answer your query ... no they do not exist ...
Unless you want a fan ...

You can buy these machines that are basically like fans I guess but you put ice packs in them which makes the air cooler. They are small enough that you could move one from room to room.
From what I understand, they're only good if you're really near them and of course the ice packs will melt in a few hours so you have to keep re-freezing them. I've seen them in dept stores for about 125-150, 000won. |

they are easily available
they do need a tube for fresh air intake which needs to extend outside.
my bet.. i'll hit up the owner of this complex real soon... go 1/2s in a wall unit. ya should be able to get 1 for about 300,000...
i figure.. if i'm comfortable for summer, it is worth 150,000. no prob |

Actually such a thing does exist but I have no idea if they sell them in Korea. My co-worker (in Canada) bought one- it consists of a lightweight window-fan-thingy attached to a main unit on wheels the size of a canister-style wet-dry vac- you can move it from room to room with relative ease but on the whole it does sound as if it is stretching the definition of 'portable'. |

that is just an air cooler... there is a big difference.
point being.. it will cost you twice as much to get 1 of these portable ones and they will not work as well as a little wasted money on a wall unit....
these things are real and all you need is to place a tube outside for the best performance.. sometimes.. the tube isnt even needed

Forgot to ask the reason why I'm asking this question is because I thought that they don't have air-con in most appartments. Is this true ?
Do they have air-con in schools ? |

when I stayed in a motel for a while last year, they had a small square aircon in the window.
the aircon had a plug going from it to the socket in the wall and nothing else.
it was in the window to allow air from the outside into it then the air was cooled and kept my room nice and cool.
I think it would have been easy for me to unplug it and carry it with me to anywhere.
check used appliance stores for one or buy one new; they shouldn't be that expensive.
older apartments may not have an aircon but most newer ones do.
if a school does not have an aircon, it's run by cheap people.
good luck |

I have a small window unit - bought it for W100k at a second-hand shop. Works like a champ. Not big, but not really portable as half of has to be outside. However, I just crank it up and use a fan to blow the cool air out of the bedroom to the living room. Or, if mega hot, just hang in the bedroom.
My heavy fur - makes summers here too hot. |

You can buy western-style in-window air conditioners in korea, but they're not very popular because windows here are quite different.
I think I saw one at one of the major discount stores? |

i couldn't put a window a/c in my joint..
i still think getting yourself a wall mounted 1 and going 1/2's with the owner to be a good shot..
who knows.. the next place you live might be air conditioned anyways..
if you say with the same guy and do another contract it is there for next year too.. not to mention you still have use of the window for air..
lugging it around, fitting it and removing it, selling it if there is no more need for it, etc.. seems to be a hassle which could be easily avoided. |
