Hey everyone!
I was wondering if anyone on here lives and works on Jeju Island?
Would you recommend it?
I have lived for 2 years on the mainland and want a change of scenery.
How about the pace of life?
Job availability?
Social life?
Seogwipo or Jeju-si? Or somewhere more rural?
If you live/have lived on Jeju I would really appreciate your input! |

use the search command at the top of the page typing in "jeju" and you'll get plenty of relevant threads you could add to: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/search.php?mode=results
we get tired of countless new threads saying exactly the same thing. do some research. then ask some questions. |

Most people on Jeju post on the Yahoo! group "rhymeswithjeju"
You will have much better luck searching through the posts there to get your answers (since the yahoo search function works way better than Dave's, which 90% of the time will give you the White Screen of Nothing).
Some short answers to your questions:
Would you recommend it?
Yes, I have really enjoyed living here.
I have lived for 2 years on the mainland and want a change of scenery.
How about the pace of life?
Probably a bit slower than on the mainland. I think the island people here are kinder (could have something to do with the fact that this is also a popular tourist destination). You've got city, nature, beaches, and mountains/oreum here, so your choice how fast you want to live.
Job availability?
EPIK or Hakwon? Actually I think there is a job posting currently up on rhymeswithjeju, might want to check it out. It's gotten more competitive to work on the island (like everywhere), but it's not impossible to find a job.
Social life?
It's there if you want it. Arrive and don't know anyone? Join a sport/club and you can make heaps of friends. Examples: Saturday Ultimate, Sunday Soccer, Veggie Meat-ups, Animal Shelter Volunteering, Volleyball, Chess, Open Mic Nights, etc. I'm sure you can find something to suit you.
Seogwipo or Jeju-si? Or somewhere more rural?
Entirely up to what you'd like. You'd probably end up in either Jeju-si (bigger and with more expats, bars, greater variety of restaurant) or Seogwipo (more laid back and smaller but not boonieville at all). I lived in the sticks on Jeju and it was great, but it's not for everyone. |
