Fast-food chains said to exploit youngsters
More than 3,500 minors between the ages of 15 and 17 at McDonald's and more than 2,800 at Burger King were found working after 10 p.m. The law forbids the practice. The fast-food chains were also shortchanging the minors on holiday pay. The amount added up to more than 500 million won ($430,000). In response, Burger King said it would close its shops at 10 p.m. "We misinterpreted related laws on holiday bonuses," said Burger King. McDonald's announced it would not employ minors after 10 p.m.

Do Korean food chains exploit youngsters?
Are the Burger King and McDonald's managers Korean or foreign?
Does the nationality (or cultural background) of the managers matter?

Not ragging you you personally but I find this hysterical.....I have students who are in academy at least until 10 and during test time till 1 a.m.
Guess it is okay for the poor guys to in a freaking hogwan until 10 or 11 or 12 or 1 ....staggering home in the middle of night to yet more homework...
It a crazy, topsy turvy world here on the ROK!

Much like smaller hands make tighter weaves in Oriental rugs, I imagine that children's hands can make a finer burger.
America was built with the gnarled hands and broken backs of the children who slaved away on plantations, lowell cotton mills, and in other menial jobs.
What's the problem? Do you want to pay $300 for a pair of Nikes?
These kids need to pay for their cellular phones, their hip hop records, and hammer pants somehow. The benevolent fast food corporations are merely giving them a character building chance to earn an honest wage. |

The problem with the article is that it is only pointing foreign fastfood companies, and not any of the local ones, or any of the other 1000s of places you can find minors working past 10PM. It is articles like this one, and the one I saw today that made foreign owned banks look bad for having a better bottom line, (ie, riping Koreans off) that shows me things haven't changed at all, and the Hub is all the more of some whacked idea, which Koreans like to say will come about, for they say it enough times, so they will believe it, but nobody elso does.... Sad.... |

Another law completely ignored. Most of the academies in my area run until at least 11 during the week and during test time as long as 1. I have never heard of anyone being shut down.
I really rankles me as my students are damn near zombie like during test season. Sleep deprivation does not do a body good!

Apparently high school students are told that sleep is directly related to their future.
five hours a night- might get into college
four hours a night- might get into a universsity
three hours a night- might get into one of the big three |

If the poor kid is only getting 3 hours sleep a night for 3 years then he/she won't make to a big 3 university. maybe the crazy home though. If i get 3 hours sleep 2 nights straight I'm irratible, can't imagine 3 years straight. |
