Hey, it's hard enough to get native speakers to speak properly. I would like people to stop saying, "Everyone ...... their....." but I think it is time to give up.
I think that there are a lot of people who say this improperly because they don't want to say what may be considered sexist, "Everyone ... his ....", or ridiculous, "Everyone ... his/her ...".

It's Konglish- words that are not Korean, usually English origin, and mean something rather different in the original language. For more check my website.

Basically you are wrong. It is teachers like you who teach kids English words and phrases are not English but rather "Konglish".

YES it is in the dictionary.

My Oxford Dictionary says:

so so adj & adv. colloq: only moderately good or well.

Who uses this word? A lot of people. In my home country of Canada it is mostly used by children.

Who do you teach? Mostly children I would say, so um...why isn't it acceptable?

I wonder when some people will learn the language they are supposed to be "teaching".

People like you on this thing make me laugh so much. OK, on my OP it MAY sound like I thought "so-so" was not proper English, but it was more of the fact that it is overused and that if they wanted to sound Native at all that they should use some of the other options.

In my later post, I made that explicit. I know "so-so" is English but it isn't used that much. You could answer the question "How are you?" with "just capital" or "grand", but we wouldn't really encourage that, would we? (maybe would, those answers are kinda funny). Anyway, I'm just saying that "so-so" is WAY overused in this country.

Just look at this thread, the majority of people agree with me (admittedly, not a huge majority, but a majority nontheless)

People like you come along and just suck the fun out of all these things.

Then start teaching the other options. I do, and when I first start teaching the other options most of the time the students literally have not learned anything else other than "average" which is hard to pronounce. A huge chunk of the people here that you are complaining to about what students say are the same ones that taught them to use so-so in the first place.

In my French, I can speak "comme ci comme ca" (spelling?) to mean "so so", and that's it. I don't really know anything else that means the same that isn't really easy to say because my teacher's never taught me anything else.

You are revising history. We all agree that so-so is heavily overused, but that's because it's all they learn to mean "acceptable" or "tollerable". Why complain about what others have no taught them when you can simply choose to act and teach them and address this vocabularly shortcoming.

I have a gripe with the Korean use of the word "promise". In Korean it is possible to ask "yak sok ee soyo?" to mean "do you have an arrangement?" but in English we don't use the word "promise" in this way.

And hey, if its on the internet, than it must be ok.

Methinks I was commenting on the fact that it is never really used in normal conversation. I know it does pop in, but I would say that it is sounds native as "fish-E" or "wish-E"

Perhaps in your circle of friends it is not used, but that is anecdotal at best and of a very small sample pool. I've clearly demonstrated that it's usage is frequent and widespread.

If you had carried out an equally energetic search on an earlier occasion, you would have discovered that the word "doubtless" is as adverb. It didn't stop you arguing otherwise though.

By what standard is it overused? In Australia people use "Good day" to mean "hello" a lot more than they do in the USA. Can an American go to Australia and say that "Good day" is overused?

(I actually have no idea if "Good Day" really is used in Autralia as much people claim it is. Just the example that came into my mind).

I've been on the "So-So is not a good answer" crusade for 3 years.

Lazy students use it the same way they use "computer games".

No more computer games! No more computer games! I'm sick of hearing 'computer games!' I just want to pound their desks and shake them by the shoulders and yell 'Go out and get some sun and minor injuries while your bones are still dense, kiddies! Starcraft will still be there when you have removeable teeth.'

And 'sleeping' shouldn't be 'fun' for nine year olds, either.

First off, I do teach them the other options. They just love to fall back on so-so.

Second, I'll cry if I want to. This is a very traumatizing experience. (OR, maybe this stuff doesn't really bug me at all and I don't take it quite as seriously as some other people seem to)

Come on, relax. We're all here just to make some money and sleep with as many Koren birds as possible, aren't we?
