The Canadian Embassy will hold a Canada Night at Cheonggye Square on 28 August. As one of the promotion events of the "2010 Visit Korea Year wtih Seoul" sponsored by Seoul City and the Seoul Tourism Organization, this event will showcase recent award-winning Canadian animated fims, including Madame Tutti-Putti, two Canadian musical groups, DJ unjin and Sotto Bamba, and a Canadian media art group Purform.

In addition, there will be a photo exhibition of Canadian Veterans of the Korean War, a photo zone where you can take photos as if you were in Canada and various events such as face painting.

Date: Saturday 28 August 2010

Time: Noon to 10:30 PM
Noon - 6PM: Photo Zone, face painting, pancakes w maple syrup, etc.
6-10:30PM: Entertainment

Venue: Cheonggyecheon Plaza
Getting There: Gwangwhamun Station, Line 5, Stop 533 Exit 5 (walk toward City Hall) or City Hall Station, Stops 132 or 201, Exit 4 walk toward the mountain). Look for the spiral cone.

Cost: Free

Come out to Cheonggyecheon and enjoy a distinctly Canadian atmosphere!

A thought on your "sold out to the US" statement. So if someone has the oppurtunity to make a better career/more money and has to move to another country to do so, that is selling out? Because, (I assume you are a teacher) that would make you and I a sellout (according to you) for being here in Korea.

What is so wrong with going to the US and making it bigger than one already is? If you crack the US market in the entertainment industry, you have a great chance at cracking the global market. All the power to ya in my opinion.

As for Canadian talent, that jacka$$ Harper took a huge chunk out of the budget for the Arts in his last budget. That accounts, imo, for alot of the problems the industry faces today.

I know a few independent directors who have done some amazing stuff, both animation and film. It is it their fault they have not received the exposure others would consider "success"?

It depends on how they go about. Simply going to another country to be famous isn't selling out. The Barenaked Ladies are a good example. Canadians in every single small town across Canada supported them for years with concert tickets, merchandise sales, etc. In the mid 90s they finally got a big hit in the US. They basically disappeared from Canada, so much so that they wrote a song apologizing before they really came back.
After 3 tours of 30+ stops in Canada, they suddenly reduced it to the big ones. Montreal/Toronto/Vancouver plus 1 or 2 more

They didn't need Canada anymore, they were big in the US!

that's a sell-out. They've made amends, and done better tours.
They usually sign with an american label and spend all their time in the US. Are they really Canadian anymore? Sure..born there..but that's it.

I wasn't an entertainment figure in Canada, so my coming to Korea for life or work are entirely different.
and as many people will painfully remind us on the boards every day, most people really aren't gone that long, and they stay painfully true to their roots while they're here.

Harper is an idiot. He's sold out to the US big time. The Canadian DMCA is a joke. I've written my MP many times.

and yeah I might consider it their fault since the government has mandated a certain percentage of content in all mediums be Canadian. So if you can't make it in a market where the government says you must be given air/tv/theater time yeah.. it kind of is your fault.
Especially when there is actually so little competition for some of that medium.

While there are a lot of Canadian bands moving through the ranks, they're mostly using Canada as a stepping stone to get elsewhere.

TV, animation, film, there isn't much coming out of Canada that is strongly notable in terms of whole productions. Just pieces here and there.
