Former British prime minister Tony Blair plans to donate the profits from his memoir to the Royal British Legion to help injured servicemen.

A spokesman for Blair said Monday the proceeds from Journey include an advance believed to be 4.6 million pounds ($7.5 million Cdn).

Journey will be released Sept. 1 in the U.K.

Blair, who led Britain into wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, said the donation was a way of honouring British service men and women. He referred to them as "the bravest and the best."

His spokesman said Blair wanted to mark "the enormous sacrifice they make for the security of our people and the world."

Blair has signed over his rights in perpetuity, including any film rights that arise from the book.

The proceeds are to go to the Battle Back Challenge Centre, a rehabilitation centre with state-of-the-art technology for veterans recovering from wounds, burns and amputations.

The centre, scheduled to open in summer 2012, is in the midst of a fundraising campaign to raise $19.6 million. The Defence Ministry and the legion are also supporting creation of the centre.

The announcement led to a jump in orders for Blair's book on the Amazon bestseller list.

Blair's decision to participate in the Iraq war was unpopular with the British public and anti-war activists have said they plan to protest at book signings for the Blair memoir.

Considering he helped start a useless war and has enough money already, seems like a good idea for the loon. Koreans love Tony, emotional, exciting, illogical Tony. Maybe Koreans are the Scottish of the east.

Really? I seem to remember plenty of English people voting for him too.

Many BRitish voted for him too. Many Ks would vote for Blair if they could. Which explains why Balir has such a lucrative lecturing career. Great speaker, but got into a bad war.
