More specifically advice from someone in the know of the building industry.

My little brother (27 from NZ) is looking at heading to Canada to work as a builder. From the look at it he has plenty of points for a working visa. He completed his apprenticeship several years ago and been working mainly in the residential sector mostly as a finisher but is pretty widely trained and has some project management experience as well.

A few friends here have suggested Calgary, is it still a place in demand for builders? if not there then any other suggestions?

Also what websites are good places to search for a. jobs and b. information.

Finally does anyone have any advice/tips that could help out?

I am from Calgary,

The building market hs fallen off a bit since we are not building as many houses, but there are still lots of industry that are building as many of the inner city buildings are expensive and dilapitated.

It depends on what your brother can build I guess.

I'm thinking that Canada's housing market is due for a slump.

Saskatoon has a backlist for 2 or more years to build new houses. demand is high, though it may be tapering off a bit these days.

Saskatoon is a darn good place to live. It only really lacks in the excitement area.

I don't think your brother would like building in -40C weather in Calgary.

Also, it would be more likely that he would find work in a smaller city.

I could be wrong, but I think the Canadian construction industry is highly seasonal: mainly from spring to fall. The ground is frozen in the winter, and therefore too cold to build. However, I'm under the impression that construction salaries are higher for this reason: to accommodate for a lack of income in the winter months, although Canadians just line up for EI anyway.

However, with an impending global market crash in the coming months/years (?), I don't see companies investing in new infrastructure or people purchasing new houses. The government has ensured that every single Canadian who could get a mortgage got a mortgage, and housing demand is/will shrink(ing).

FYI: My friend here in Ontario is a unionized commercial insulator, and he has been out of work for 4 months. Don't recommend Ontario.

If he is experienced in working with high rise concrete buildings I would go to Vancouver or Calgary.

wooden structures I would suggest Saskatoon.

I haven't looked for work in Canada for years in the traditional way of looking for work...so I can't really help you out further.
