I've been here for 8 weeks now and still don't have my ARC, bank account, or cell phone. The school promised to do this for me, and they normally do it within the first week or two. I've been informed that not only is this unusual, it's also illegal. One other person started the job at the same time as me; still doesn't have her card but isn't worried about it. The other night, someone told me I should ask about it, and if given a bullshit answer, I should start looking for a new job.

My question is, why would the school put off something this important? Also, could this cause problems for me? Should I start looking for a new job this weekend?

it's important to you... but they're probably on 'Korea time,' meaning they'll get around to it when it's important to them.... so it's your mission, if you choose to accept it, to make it important to them... Wink

Whining about those types of things can be helpful in the short term.... getting a Korean teacher not part of the management can be another benefit for you... they'll help out in any number of ways if played correctly. Cool

You have 90 days to apply for and receive an ARC. You can open a bank account with your passport, but you'd end up going back and linking it with your ARC anyway.

If you're that worried about it, tell your director that you went to a night club and you couldn't get in with your US driver's license, they wanted a Korean government issued photo ID, so if he/she could pretty please speed the process along, you'd appreciate it, thanks and kamsahamnida.

Presumably this means you haven't been paid yet? If so, I'd be looking for a new job.

It is not a good sign. You are legally required to have it completed within 90 days of arrival and you probably don't have your medical exam yet (an ARC requirement).

It also means you don't have not and are likely NOT going to get NHIC medical coverage or pension (since your ARC is required to register you).

NOTE: if you go over your 90 days you will be subject to fines and/or an exit order for violation of immigration law. It would also mean that you will have problems getting another visa or extension in future.
