You could set this title to the English Beat's "Mirror in the Bathroom" and have 5 second clips of little kids on the rampage in the classroom.

For hitting a 14yr old boy? Only if she went postal with a stick and beat the crap out of him.

I'd rather be fired for setting some rules like: NO PUNCHING ME IN THE BACK, then have to work at a place where the director does F-all to help me in that situation.

I have 2 childrens classes this term. One class is 9/10 year olds, the other 11-13. I have been very lucky. They never cause any problems and I absolutely adore these classes and look forward to them starting and feel sad when they end.

This has always been the same with me for 5 years now with pre-school -High School.

I think the "secret" is what happens the first day. Many things happen, but here are a few.

1. I introduce myself by having them guess the answeres to questions about me, where from age, etc.

Well, for age, I tell them to keep guessing higher. Finally, I say I am 20,000. Then they have to guess how that is possible. Some say ghost, vampire, etc. Finally someone says angel. I say yes, and then to prove it I give each one an orange and a piece of chocolate.

At this point they all love me.

2. The students introduce themselves.

This makes them feel so important. And a part of the class. It becomes a community where they all work together. The seeds to that have now been planted.

3. Do somthing from the book. Makes the mom's happy.

4. Play a game.

Then after that each class is great. The first day is so important.

Got to run. Lab is closing. More on this later.

I wish I'd have known that BEFORE my first day.

Dude! Thump him on the head or have one of your Korean friends call his parents everyday until they call the school. Your boss will pay attention then.

As far as the first day thing, you must make an example out or the kid with the most clout. Sounds harsh but sometimes you have to think on their level. I told thiskid once not to set FIRE (yes fire) to the stairs in our school once. I said it was dangerous and all that crap. Did he care..no. I caught him again. I had to think back to when I was a kid. Warnings of danger didn't scare me. The threat of violence and /or visual aids did it to me. I took this kid and showed him pictures on the internet of burn victims. He pleaded with me to turn it off. Problem solved and maybe created a scar for life in the process but at lease he won't play with fire. Anyway, kick his a@# and pester his parents.

Well in hindsight I think I should have hit him back, but hey he's a kid and after all my years of teacher training being told not to use physical violence it would be wrong. The kid does not have ADD, ADHD or any other kind of disorder he's just plain nasty. I did have one of my Korean friends who also teaches there call his mom and well the blame has been put on me, its my fault, apparently I provoked him!! Mad Anyhows whats done is done but I will make his life a living hell for the next few months I'm there.

I serioulsy get pissed off when reading how the blame is on "you". Well I guess it was in the sense you didn't give him an ass kicking.

Hitting kids might be wrong, but what would you do if it was outside the classroom and someone punched you in the back? Just because you are in a classroom shouldn't give the little brat "immunity".

I'd suggest if he hits you again, and you cannot bring yourself to hit him, REFUSE, yes you heard me REFUSE to teach him.

Try giving them writing exercises. I had a class like that, insulting, lazy, stupid, and abusive. They were also theives, cheaters and liars. I no longer have it, but I would just give the little pricks lots of writing to do and it would keep them busy. Then I would leave the room and go do something for 10 minutes, come back, repeat. It worked, for me, at least.

Unacceptable. Everytime he enters the classroom for a class, show him the door. Do not teach him, the director will eventually tire of it, or your next 19 weeks will be with him outside the classroom. That was crossing the line big time. I hope that you can resolve it, without resorting to any direct physical punishment. Best of luck. Smile
