It certainly is, but how can you expect a Korean to understand North American cultural nuance? |

... and then actually be offended and off-put about it.
Then again, once you explain to them that you're actually not white, don't be surprised when they start being more critical of your English or teaching ability (no matter how good it actually is)... eventually leading to problems with your employment (assuming you're an English teacher, of course).
You may laugh at that, but it's been known to happen. |

| Americans claim a specific heritage because they want to feel part of an older or more specific tradition. Sure it's tiresome listening to an italian-american go on about how special his culture is or an irish-american attribute everything about his personality to being irish but it doesn't mean that they aren't assimilated. |

This kind of thing is foreign to most Koreans, so be easy on them.
To the limited extent that Koreans have mixed ancestry/ethnicity, they even deny it. |

I thought a 'White Mexican' was a ;White Russian' minus the vodka and plus tequila... preferrably drank in a low-rider....
before assuming a Koren is racist for not knowing American ethnographic history, consider an American's own racism, in assuming all other country's really care about it. |

Time to go back into your closet and visit Narnia. Everyone in the world cares about this. Should they? Probably not. The fact remains that race is a major issue around the world. And always will be. |

Maybe they think you are 'white' because you look it? |

| Asians couldn't tell the difference by look between say a brit, an italian, or a jew. I think they'd all look white to them. |

On the same subject, I was surprised to meet white new zealanders with scottish and english surnames claiming to be maoris |
I'm not sure what the deal is now, but it used to be beneficial to be able to claim Maori ancestry (university scholarships/ fees etc). There was a lot of resentment about this 'positive' discrimination when I was at university. |

| Can't blame a Korean for thinking an American usually means white, considering 80% of Americans are classified as white. |

| I really don't understand it when people whom I meet and who are of Latino heritage insist that they aren't white when they often have fairer skin than I do or in some cases slightly darker skin than the average so called white person. |

Because Korea in ethinically homogenous, and their neighboring countries (Japan, China, Mongolia, etc...) are all ethnically homogenous, its not strange to think that some Koreans mix up race and nationality.
For many Asian countries, your nationality IS your race.
To help you understand, its like this. Many Americans think Mexican food they eat is what they eat is what people in Mexico eat. Why do they think that? Because you'll get a Chimichanga and Nachos in a Mexican restaurant in New York or a Mexican Restaurant in Florida.
Is that REAL Mexican food? Of course not. Its Tex-Mex. But, because people associate that food with what they see around themselves, they think it is.
Are you still confused?
Koreans think Americans are white because they are used to the notion of a nation having a homogeneous population. |
